I've never tried this, but I did some quick reading on the articles you linked.

All I gotta say is

FUCK THESE FREELOADERS!
This asshole Mark Ghosh (GOSH!) writes:

So you're against 1) Thanking the designer and 2) against giving away something that is arbitrary and unlimited? Pagerank comes out of thin air so what the fuck does it matter if they're "leeching off the page rank" of your blog.

If people wanna make shit for free without reward, perfectly fine with me. But most people are driven by reward, so i would expect a sharp drop in quality and amount of free themes available.
