You should read Chomsky. He accurately described that such discontent exists throughout much of Europe as well as the United States. The Bush administration publicly reprimands any government (France, Spain) which
dares to listen to their people (i.e. stay out of Iraq). The majority of European countries that have troops in Iraq have populations that are largely against the occupation, but their governments insist on staying solely to maintain their relationship with the United States.
Being the world's economic powerhouse certainly has its advantages.
