Actually, 2 of the best programmers I have known have succumbed to the same shit.

Escapism to the extreme, and I am not even kidding.
One lost his job and then spent the next half year living in WoW, pissing away his savings.
The other one was caught in a crappy job (same I was in, but I got out) and basically just decided to quit coming to work and spend his time boozed up, playing Lineage II.
Needless to say, they fired his sorry ass.

Both bright, highly intelligent people, but nothing would get through to them anymore. The MMORPGs got more important than anything else.

I do enjoy my games and yes, I have been lost to the world for some time as well. I cherish my escapism, to say the least.
But I have never crossed that line.

(And before you get all high and moral on me - don't kid yourself, escapism can be fueled by anything - books, movies, internet forums...waitasecond...)
