That was a hard list to read, and I can add my observation that the poor pay more for everything, especially and including getting to their money. They often don't have bank accounts so they use check cashing services that take a chunk in fees. Payday loans are the worst of all.
You can make an immediate different by joining a freecycle list and putting your stuff out for people who need it. Yesterday, I posted I had a space heater to give away, and somebody grabbed it within a half hour.
People need clothes, housewares, entertainment, furniture. Freecycling is a great way to help out without spending anything.
