I thought the same thing about it being a fake and then I thought: It could have really happened, and he's serious about wanting to see her again but realizes that she's too embarrassed to see him again so he's trying to be funny, to make light of the situation in hopes that she will eventually find it just funny and they could end up dating.
Or it could just be a fake.
