I fried an external a few years ago because of heat. Learned my lesson and now if I have an external without a fan built-in, I grab a house fan and put it on it when it's in use. Haven't had a drive fail since I figured that out.

Even the cheap Western Digital ones will work fine for backups as long as you keep them cool. Storage is so cheap these days, I'd recommend you buy 2 and backup your backup.
