Monetizing a site about weed

I kinda got a spur of the moment idea sometime around 2am :rasta:. I did some keyword research, checked out the competition, and set up a site. About an hour or so ago something hit me...

How the fuck am I gonna monetize this!?

Adsense is obviously out of the question. So that basically leaves me headshop referal programs like GrassCity (just an example, their commissions blow) and zip/email submits.

At least thats all I know. Obviously I'm not too great at monetization so what other sources of revenue would you suggest?

I'd look into the paraphernalia stuff that everyone else mentioned. I also remember seeing a glass blowing equipment affiliate which might work. I know plenty of stoners who like to blow there own glass.

You might check and see if High Times has an affiliate program. I'd probably try some porn and dating type offers.

I've got the domain fightprohibition.com and I've been going back and forth about starting a weed site myself. I'd be curious to hear how you do.

@scott - If I actually keep interest in this site longer than a week, I may start a thread or something covering whats going on with the site.
 
I'm an affiliate of herbal smoke shop. My problem has been getting an adwords campaign setup for my product ;) Even though there are a lot of advertisers for the keyword, I keep getting denied. So my work recently has consisted of building up the natural rankings.

How about...

Flights to Amsterdam! Sell packages with accommodation and coffee shop tours too!

(prob not gonna work if your target market is stoners in the states though!)
 
You guys call yourself marketers and this is all you can come up with, fuckin childs play my friends. I'd give you some insanely sick ideas if i wasn't starting a site soon myself. But honestly think bigger, theres way better more creative things you can do.


edit: one basic thing i see missing is SEEDS!! seed companies in europe have aff programs and DO ship to the US, more people buy seeds onnline thatn you think. OK you have a hydro ebook. Add aff links to homedepot or somewhere that has all the supplies, then aff link to seeds, then aff link link to lighting, aff to nutrients, aff to scale, aff to fans(for venelation of your grow room), aff to storage(plastic bins, whatever)
 
Amsterdam vacation packages will be something I will look into in the future.

Seeds was something I was going to avoid, but I think I may check it out now. Fans, scales, grinders, papers, pieces, and similar items have already been looked into.

Kidding aside, I'm sure there are affiliates for "how to pass a drug test" that I would imagine pay out pretty good. Also, why not a list of "Top 10 Songs To Listen To When Smoking Pot", affiliate links to iTunes or Amazon and even get the post Dugg. Have the munchies? Why not offer some pizza hut, burger king or some type of zip submit where they can win food for life or something retarded like that... look around for food offers for people with munchies!

Also... concert tickets to bands like Phish, Phil Lesh and Friends, Ben Harper, Cypress Hill and shit like that. Maybe with a list of "Bong Toking Tours in Your Town" and link each act to stubhub or something
 
Don't forget aff links to lawyers who specialize in getting your ass out of trouble for this shit. :p

Also, might want to look into cd sales for bands like Kotten Mouth Kings and shit like like. They were featured on the cover of High Times several months back, theres another one maybe there is an aff for subcription to High Times. :)
 
Actually, if you could get a hook-up at High Times mag and get the scoop on upcoming headlines, there has to be SE traffic from the cover stories.

While you're at it, place an ad in the magazine to drive laser targeted readers to your site and hook them up with a free "how to (roll, grow, hide)" email series...

To play off the lawyer idea (which was fucking excellent btw) maybe you could sell them a prepaid legal program... call it 'weed smoker insurance' or something.. that program pays like mad, plus it's mlm so people could end up making you rich later down the road.

Maybe get in touch with Willie Nelson's website for a link xchange...

There's some nice blade/mirror kits and snorter tubes around in headshops - and coke users generally have a higher disposable income than users of other recreation drugs - could be profitable. A lot of the great ideas here would apply.

Fuck man, why can't they just sort out the drugs laws so these products can be sold legally, taxed, quality controlled etc? (I know... keep the masses under control...)

My shroom site was great (while it lasted) - I'd love to do that with other drugs, think I'd leave the physical side of things to someone else though!

I can't be fucked to find the figures, but even with regulation, quality control and taxation the end user price would be lower for most drugs if legal - there would be plenty of cash spare to pay affiliates a good commission!

if the majority of the people visiting your site are already high, play to their paranoia, when they land on your page have giant blinking text that says like...ENTER YOUR PHONE NUMBER IN THE FORM BELOW OR A GIANT WALKING TOASTER OVEN IS GOING TO EAT YOU, and then have a ringtone offer iframed in below it =)
