Whitehat No idea what host to use.. Sick of HostGator

Hostgator is garbage since being acquired by EIG, as you all know.

I know the 'what host should i use' topic has been beaten to death and I've seen plenty of good suggestions on WF but I guess my concern is that I don't know which options require me to have a high level of technical expertise, and which don't.

I'm not a tech-savvy person. I'm not a software engineer or server admin or anything like that. But I want to get good hosting that increases my performance and shows google that I mean business!

I've seen Bluehost recommended a lot. But that'd still be shared hosting. How much of a performance increase would I see going to a 'good' shared hosting company and leaving hostgator? or is it still unreliable and not a good option?

Am I better off with VPS or some other alternative? If so, what.

My websites are not my primary source of income, so cost is a factor. Cheaper is better, but I want good performance. My websites are wordpress sites, domains registered at ipage, and all sites are less than 500 unique visits per day. Nothing complex like forums either.. just typical content and ecommerce sites.

And I'd need customer service. Since again, I can't troubleshoot complex problems on my own. I need a service that has a live person that I can call into for help. So some super cheap do-it-yourself type of platform might not be great for me because I'm not technical enough.

Cheap, fast. Tickets get replied in an hour or 2. Sites never went down in last 4 years. I have different 6 accounts with them and never had any problem.

Inmotion - shared hosting

WiredTree - VPS

Good things with both of those companies.

Thanks for creating this thread and sorry for hijacking it.

Can anyone reccommend me a cheap vps for hosting my aff lp's?
Daily traffic would be around 50k-75k.

I was looking as wiredtree as suggested above but their vps seems pretty expensive($55/mn and above). So any suggestions would be great.

thanks

Knownhost replies to tickets in the 10 minutes or less. Usually in about 6-7 minutes

Go with Godaddy and have more problems than ever :-)

Have any range on your budget? I have my own dedi server from Liquid web for $200 a month and all I can say is they are really good in this end. I can create any VPS with any stats I want with the limitation of the server I pay for and host your site from there. They'll guide you though it needs a little programming which is really out for OP.

Haven't used it before but based on experience on dedicated servers, would recommend the same company. Hosting at around $20-25 with own dedicated IP.

Bluehost = Hostgator. It's the exact same now. BH is also EIG.

Then avoid the (bad!) advice to "get a VPS!". Just look for a better host, not a different product entirely.

VPS can actually be worse/slower than a good shared serer. Many are. It all depends on the specs, etc. It's really the host that matters -- i.e., how overstuffed ("oversold", overallocated) are the servers. VPS can be as bad or worse than shared.

domains registered at ipage
Another EIG company NOT to be trusted. I'm strongly suggest moving those over to Namecheap.

Quote:

This is going to be a problem. Phone "techs" are never techs, but rather glorified secretaries. Real issues take time, and real techs get paid too much to waste time on the phone. They quickly go from ticket to ticket, without needlessly pauses and "ums" on the phone. If you insist on phone help, you'll be stuck with crappy companies like EIG and Godaddy. That's just the way it works. Most hosts don't waste time or funds to have "operators standing by" since they're mostly useless.

I have used their VPS and use to run GSA and some other tools. Never got any issue, support is good too.

Also, i recommend SolidSEOvps, they have good plans with good price.

Only need shared hosting at this point i decided. Narrowed it down to InMotionHosting vs HawkHost.

Thinking of doing InMotionHosting.. I like the attention I've gotten during the sign up process in terms of questions, etc.

They also offer a file download to test server speed right on their homepage, so they're obviously not hiding anything. I know plenty of hosts do this, or certainly provide it via email if not. But I like how it's front and center here.

I would choose a VPS over shared hosting any day. You're more in control but the downside is they're a little more difficult to setup. Get a VPS and install Zpanel on it! If you don't know how learn you won't regret it.

After being acquired by EIG their procedures changed a lot and they lost the attitude they were famous for. Customers are numbers and not people to them. Well, tickets are still processed and replied, but something changed about it...

While many people don't bother as long as their domains/hosting work - many do freak out as they are used to "being served appropriately" and HostGator support does not go an extra mile any more.

Yeah, and this real hosting company should start promoting themselves everywhere, yeah? In fact, we are posting on many popular forums - and nearly all of them have such kinds of threads. And some of said threads are hundreds of pages long. And newbies post in them because they pop up in popular threads list, because newbies post on them.

One of the most popular topics for such threads are - "Hostgator sucks", then goes "What is the best hosting provider/domain registrar?", then goes "Namecheap VS Godaddy".

Seeing this thread was like meeting an old friend - you always know what you will see.

Over the last few months I have seen many posts like this one about hostgator which is a bit surprising as they are one of the more commonly known hosting providers but I guess you should now move to some new web hosting company which has recently established and looking to get clients and make sure to provide their best services so they don't lose any clients as they can't afford it since they are rather new in this business and not wanna lose a single client unlike a company who already have thousands of clients and struggling to give proper attention to each of these clients.

Despite all the negative feedback, I still think HG is one of the contenders out there. But their tech support really needs to improve.

Been using Hostgator since, then transferred to Godaddy (totally sucks) then went back to HG. I think I like HG better though I haven't tried other hosting companies. Shared hosting is good unless you don't mind switching cpanels every now and then esp if you have multiple domains.

It is up to you what host company to choose, but we at Alnitech tried to compile a list of important points people need to consider while choosing new host. May be they will useful to you while making a decision:
♣ Business requirements. It is important to discover what is precise server configuration you need, backup solution, online security, monitoring, uptime, server management service, compliance with geographical requirements and local laws
♣ Pricing - Figure out common fees that associated with most providers (monthly rent, license, server management fees, overage charges if any, abuse charges etc. )
♣ Reliability- shortly: a company that cannot guarantee 24/7, above 99.9% server uptime should not fit in your list. If your server will be down 1% of time a year, it will equal to almost 4 days, so 0.1% is ~10h !
♣ Host flexibility - purchasing services from a company, which can work with not standard requests and provide custom solutions may benefit to you.
♣ Customer support - This is big. You can’t underestimate it. The superiority of the assistance offered is very important. Company should provide professional answers to your questions/problems in timely manner.
♣ Reviews - Find real, honest reviews of people who have used the company’s services

If cost is a main factor, take a VPS out of the equation. It sounds like shared hosting is more than enough for you, and I believe BlueHost is also an EIG brand as well now.

I'd suggest maybe checking out ezpzhosting.co.uk

Hi, m not sure about what had happened to Hostgator I was using their service a past year ago... I only suggest you migrate your website to another server.
Basically, my website is now hosted on Domainking.ng server. I quite happy with them and VPS plans is very Cheap.. That's my opinion...
