Ha Ha, Bitches!
I'm in Overland Park, a suburb of Kansas City Kansas, and the news just announced here (With google's blog post as well) that we're getting the Gigabit fiber! No date set yet but they said they chose KCK (which is pretty much an industrialized slum) because it could be "implemented Quickly" there and would "Do the most good" there. -Of this I have no doubt. I just hope it gets down here to OP.

The question is how much it will cost
The reason you americans don't have 1gbit lines is becouse the goverment doesn't re-invest money in Cable/Wiring. For example in Bulgaria a 100Mbit Download/50Mbit Upload line costs ~25$. 1Gbit Download/500Mbit Upload costs arround 200$ |

They claim the price will be competitive with current broadband internet providers. If Google can come in and offer 1Gbps at a similar price to other companies offering 12Mbps, the other companies might start to consider upgrading their service in other cities. Right now there is little competition in many areas, so not much incentive to upgrade service to customers.
There is a small city in my area that declared broadband internet a city utility and built their own fiber network because the local provider was dragging their feet for years. Suddenly after that announcement the local provider wanted to provide fiber to the door of every home in this city and tried to sue them. |
