Orly Magento taken over by eBay

Might be of interest to some:

Magento have 4 products; Community, GO, Pro & Enterprise. Only one of these is free.

Also the most interesting part of the buyout is that ebay are releasing their own "Open Ecommerce" platform called X.Ecommerce (can be found at x.com) which is powerd by the Magento Zend Framework. Who knows what will happen when this is released, think it's probably be the end of the free Magento community edition anyway.

That actually makes a lot of sense. If they are using the magento frame work then why not own it. Wouldn't want a competitor to scoop it up.

Anyone know what the new Magento fees are? Is it recommended to offer "free shipping" in your Magento store now? Will Magento users now have support from those helpful Asians on the Ebay support chat?

Not a good move for us Magento developers.
We'd pay fees for every theme and plugin sold.
WTF it's like WordPress bought by ExpressionEngine

The message is clear: ebay bought magento for one big reason. That reason will be beneficial to them.

Now eBay is taking over Magento completely. The deal should be finalised by the third quarter of 2011.

From a strategic point of view the e commerce system is to be the heart of eBay’s new X.Commerce platform. This will create a common base for the eBay, PayPal and now Magento developer communities. Observers see this as a way for eBay to regain momentum with new technologies such as, for example, mobile platforms after a recent weakening of their core business in the auction and fixed price markets.

The more than 290 Magento employees are to keep their jobs after the takeover and, according to a FAQ about it (PDF), the present Magento e commerce platform will continue to be supported by eBay. Quite apart from that the management wants to integrate the first systems and processes into the eBay platform in the course of the coming year, in the context of the future development of X.Commerce and under the leadership of Matthew Mengerink.
