gruntgrunt has a spectacular aura about
Mustread Ringtones are changing

In the next 3-4 weeks all the carriers will implement an extra step after pin confirmation. After confirming a pin code, users will receive a message similar to: "You will be subscribed for $9.99/mo to the XYZ RINGTONE PLAN, if you agree reply with "Yes" or "No" if you do not."

This has already been announced to the major ringtone companies and several large affiliate networks...

That's so lame. Ringtone companies are holding their customers hands like a small child.

Try not to be so fuckin naive. Either they're doing because of new regulations or because of too many cancellations from customers who didn't realize they were being charged. Not because they hate profits.

That sounds about right. Sounds like what was happening was the affiliates were getting paid and the ringtone company was getting a bunch of charge backs.

This doesn't surprise me at all, the ringtone business has always been pretty shady. Do you really think people actually knew they were going to get billed $10/month for downloading a ringtone that was marketed as free?

The OA has a spectacular aura about
Online advertising is now getting a hard look from government regulators, as so many shady (or 'just creative enough to be legal') tricks have been used and reported.

I know the mortgage and home loan industry is really attacking the advertisements used both online and off-line; especially flyers, brochures, billboards, etc. But hey, each regulation that comes down on businesses also brings with it a solution to deal with it at little cost.

Gotta love the progressiveness and genius-ness of entrepreneurs..

Yeah none of this stuff changes anything in the end. It just makes it more difficult for people who don't know what they are doing in the first place.

If they are going to do that, then the payouts will have to be like $72 for anyone to profit. But then again, I'm sure they will be able to afford that now since their customers will know what they are getting into.

Before, I'm sure they had their margins down perfect. After an average of x amount of months, the 15 year old with a cell phone's mom audits the bill and realizes she's been paying 10 dollars a month for ringtones and calls to complain and cancel. Based on that, they were able to pay out $x and make a profit.

Just an update... some ringtone merchants will no longer be accepting traffic from carrier splash pages either. My AM at Neverblue told me last week. Now I have to change up my LPs.

I read about this first on cpashare.com some time ago:

CPA Share » Blog Archive » New Ringtone Marketing Policies Go In Effect 10/1/2007

Quote:
Being a small network i work with flycell directly and received an E-mail from my friend/affiliate manager Daphne from flycell letting me know about the new mma marketing policies that are going into affect 10/1/07 these policies pretty much fuck us and i don’t understand the reasoning of the new rules going into affect…

Read for yourself??
(I believe that this is the only changed rule): As of October 1, 2007, affiliates will not be permitted to host a “choose your carrier page.” All advertising must point to a page hosted by the Advertiser by October 1, 2007.
I don't get why this would be forbidden..

Seriously. It makes no sense why they would forbid using carrier splashes as a call to action. Almost every ringtone LP I've ever seen has used this method. My guess would be a lot of false advertising on the part of some affiliates, but only time will tell.

Right now, they are still letting it fly... carrier splashes are okay. My AM from Neverblue told me that by the end of 2007, they are going to start really cracking down on this.
