Orly Facebook worth $15B? Microsoft thinks so...

Quoted from an article located here:
Quote:
SAN FRANCISCO (MarketWatch) -- Microsoft Corp. will acquire a significant stake in popular online social networking company Facebook Inc., the company said Wednesday. Microsoft said in a prepared statement that it will contribute $240 million toward an upcoming financing round for Facebook that values the closely-held company at $15 billion. Microsoft said the deal will expand the companies' existing advertising partnership, whereby Microsoft sells online advertisements for Facebook within the U.S. Microsoft will also now sell advertisements for Facebook internationally, the company said. Microsoft had reportedly been involved in a protracted bidding war with rival Google Inc. for a stake in the rapidly-growing social networking company.

Good find, Dave.

It kind of makes me wonder why a giant like Microsoft wouldn't just create their own
social networking site. Obviously, they have the resources to do it. They've seen the success of Myspace and Facebook... wonder why they haven't jumped on that wagon yet.

I certainly wouldn't put MSN Messenger on the "fail miserably" list. It's the most widely used worldwide. In the US, most of the retards and kids in highschool use GayIM.

I don't think Microsoft thinks Facebook is worth 15 billion. Balmer was even calling it just a fad the other week which to be honest like all social networks it is.

I think they think the exclusive advertising deal with facebook is worth $240 million though.

Mostly compensation for Google having a bigger virtual dick IMHO. Bad business decision.

Wasn't sure where to stick this, but I didn't want to make yet another myspace/facebook thread so I"ll just throw it in here.

BetaNews | MySpace Beats Facebook in Ad Platform Announcement

Looks like Myspace one uped facebook on the adtech annoucement...although there was not much info.

I must say, I myself am a bit of a FB junky. There was a particular app called Fight Club where you fight friends etc. Freaking addictive. At one stage I was in the F50 out of 700000 peeps. Took up way too much of my time.
