Any thoughts on gbuy?

Seeing as google is getting ready to launch gbuy, anyone have any thoughts on this? Im curious to see how they integrate it, but I don't think it will be able to replace paypal since its already backed by ebay.

Google is trying really hard to take over just about everything... haha... I'm still suprised there ia now Google Games or anything yet to compete with Yahoo.

Anyways.. you mention a good point that paypal is backed by ebay... but I still dunno. Maybe they will make a Gbay to go with Gbuy? Haha..

I'm starting to wonder if they are stretching themselves too thin. Yeah, they've been hiring like mad (I think i saw that is was like 8 new employees per day on average) but they are still nowhere near the size of a microsoft.

I guess we'll see what their strategy is, but yeah, at the moment it sees like theyre trying to get a hand in everything.

My opinion has always been the same. Google is run by nerds that are trying to be businessmen, they will never be businessmen no matter how hard they try. One day they are going to have too many services to manage and too many employees to look after and it will fall away from them.

I'm just waiting to see if I can embed their system into my ecommerce websites like you can with paypal, and if so, I'd like to know if they offer a better deal. I heard that people can only make purchases at the gbuy website, which to my mind kind of sucks. But the way they spin it is that people will trust their system better than your own. So the question is how well will it convert, if people can only purchase at gbuy.

If they do it right they could not just destroy paypal, they could end up riveling ebay. No one has said anything about Google starting an auction service but I'm willing to bet they already have plans.

The way Paypal is run has pissed off a lot of people, and the problems almost always go back to freezing funds. A few weeks ago I read an ebay retailer who sold DVDs. One customer who had bought thousands of dollars of DVDs over the past few months charged back their credit card, the retailer's account was frozen. Not only did the seller get screwed, everyone who had placed orders was out because the money was simply inaccessable. For a business with a tight cash flow thats death.

As long as Google pays attention to Paypal's horrendous fuck ups, and avoids them, they'll do very well.

Google Base with a few mods could work as one.

It will be interesting to so how this turns out, if they make it free and good - eBay's dead.

I can't wait to try it. Paypal is too limited. There are just somethings that it should be able to do that it just can't and their customer service sucks.

I couldn't agree more. PayPal's customer service is less useful than dog poo.

I just read about this earlier today on Slashdot. The way they described it (finding things on the internet and then paying with Gbuy) made it sound not so great to me.

The whole point of paypal is so people don't have to get merchant accounts. Knowing Google, I'm sure they will do it right though. I'll be excited to see what the end product is like.

I read another article on it today, nice perks for a few places: http://www.google.com/buy/m.html

Check the middle offers and the Citi offer

It will be cheaper than paypal as well, $0.20 and 2% compared to Paypal's $0.30 and 2.9%

If it has the reach of paypal - and being google there is no reason not to think it will and is cheaper than paypal then it will give paypal a long over due run for it's money.

Watch paypal's prices drop soon
