You would think a company with the power and funds such as Microsoft could compete (and beat) a company like google....

There have been a few people that have tried to compete with Google.
Google has offered them a garbage truck full of money and some stock options, and they just give their code up like that.
It happens all the time. You really think Google makes all of the improvements to its algorithm internally?

It's kind of sad really.
Google started out as a company that just wanted to make searching easier, and turned into this juggernaut so quickly that I get the feeling even Page & Brin don't know what the fuck happened. I doubt they're bothering to question it either, and their just swimming in vaults of coinage, like Scrooge McDuck, now.
