Hi, I have this idea that I think has great potential. It's something similar to digg but instead of news users submit something else. Anyway, I have no skills in web design or programming. I plan to outsource all of the work.
1. How much do you think I must spend on this whole project or to get a site like digg up and running? I think my expenses are going towards hiring programmers, designers, paid posters and also hosting. 2. Would it be a good idea to use drigg and have my programmers tweak it around? 3. Is paid posting the best way to kickstart a website like that? |

It could be as cheap as $500 or as expensive as +$20,000 depending on what the site needs to accomplish and who you pay to get it done. Sure Digg could make a decent prototype if it has similar goals/features.
The method of marketing this site would depend on it's niche and demographics. You can bet your ass that a good campaign plan will involve some costs. |

Err... you know that reddit has gone open source, right?
Ya can just install and run it right away. Then figure out what you want to change / add and bingo. ::emp::

A custom hack will probably be your best bet but Yams left out a few 0's in estimating your costs to do this. If anyone thinks digg was built for under a million dollars they are a fool. However, that's not saying you can't get an custom, yet inferior, knockoff for a few k ... so from that perspective Yams is right. Check out emp's suggestion, reddit is a pretty seasoned site with tons of traffic. Depending on your desired features, that might be the way to go. Another option is Pligg, which is a pretty efficient digg clone, but has a million vulnerabilities so break out the duct tape. |

I suggest that you contact someone who has a good team in India, like RedVirus or Kamesh. Ask them about how much it would cost to program (either with their team, or if they can provide a contact to another contractor w/ a reliable programmer team. Don't forget to give them a referral fee if you ask them to link you w/ programmers).
