Amazon Starts Selling Groceries Online

I can't wait to see the affiliate sites for this stuff:

Quote:
SAN FRANCISCO, June 14 (Reuters) - Internet retailer Amazon.com Inc. has started selling groceries on its Web site, a cautious step into a business that was one of the biggest casualties of the dot-com collapse.

The service is limited to non-perishable goods such as cereal, pasta and canned soup, but Amazon can ship those items to any customer, unlike online grocers that only deliver to limited areas..... More

It will be interesting to see how this pans out for Amazon after the earlier attempts at it a few years ago.

Glad to see it - The grocery store around the corner (National Chain) seems to only hire people who do not want to work there..and it's a royal pain in the ass when human interaction is required.

Everything points to online anyway - when you walk into a brick and mortar store - and ask for a product - they say, "We can ordered through our web site and then you can pick it up at the store when it comes in". What the hell - just go home and order it - You go to the store to buy it now -

Sorry - Conventional Retail Models morphing into the New Retail Model just pisses me off..

Yeah but what about when you're behind on projects and you know you need to shop for a dinner next week or something? Might be nice to order online and have everything show up a day or two before.

True - Thank God there are those self-checkout registers for quick shopping runs -

We tend to plan out the next month and try only go once a week for produce, dairy, and such..

Or what about those times when you are posting like crazy and barely even have time to eat much less shop for food?

Out here in NY we have a company called Fresh Direct that delivers fresh food.
They've been in business for a little while now and as far as I know, they're profitable.

We had something here a while back from Randall's grocery stores call "PeaPod" - but the delivery charges were almost equal to the grocery bill and it failed quickly..min order was 100.00 and i think the delivery would be between 50.00 and 70.00 bucks (delivery, admin charges, etc)

In the future small local "niche stores" will deliver to your home like they did a long time ago - smaller grocery stores will pop up with full service and not be competitive as much as quick and easy.. "Dominos Does Milk and Cheese"!, type thing.. they already deliver food and soft drinks.. it would not be a stretch..

Reminds me of the Dobie Gillis show. Remember how he used to deliver groceries for his dad's store?

Why, I remember the show and I'm not old. I loved watching it on Nick at Nite when I was a kid.

I didn't see how long it would take them to deliver. But it will really help some people get even more isolated and not leave the house for even longer periods of time

That's where it's headed now - I get over loaded just going to the local shopping mall - too many people milling around like ants ..too many conversations going by - only 40 year old wearing a nano just to shut out the noise...
