Cool Put 100 DVDs on a single disc

Just in time for the end of the Earth in 2012, General Electric promises a massive increase in digital storage capacity on a single DVD-sized disc. Below is a quote from the article in the New York Times.

Source: hxxp://www.nytimes.com/2009/04/27/technology/business-computing/27disk.html?_r=1

Quote:
In G.E.’s approach, the holograms are scattered across a disc in a way that is similar to the formats used in today’s CDs, conventional DVDs and Blu-ray discs. So a player that could read microholographic storage discs could also read CD, DVD and Blu-ray discs. But holographic discs, with the technology G.E. has attained, could hold 500 gigabytes of data. Blu-ray is available in 25-gigabyte and 50-gigabyte discs, and a standard DVD holds 5 gigabytes.

I heard somewhere that if storage technology continues the way it is, in 10 years all the data in the world will be able to fit in your palm

I saw a snippet about being able to expect 64gb MicroSDs by Xmas this year in one of the tech blogs I read.
Fucking scary thought that something the size of your pinky nail can hold twice the amount of information that the internet held in 1995.

What's wrong with discs?
You really gonna trust all your information to sit in the cloud?

Fuck that, I want a permanent recording in case something goes arse up, and HDDs are prone to failure if you don't have a cascading backup system.

The problem is, at one point there is so much entropy that discs are going to be useless as fast as you can burn them.

I have hundreds of backups. I will never access them. I have so many backups, I don't even want to look through them.

Cool! When the CD came people also thought 'Hey, I can have all my stuff now on this one "little" thing.'. Now even a 1TR hard drive isn't enought. So, now we think that 100 DVD's on a single disc is big. In few years in will be old news and still not enough.

I must read far too much science fiction because everything currently being pushed by technology companies seems so cliche to me. I want someone to work out how to store information in the charge differences of atomic particles. Then we would come full circle as computation and storage devices.

Now there's a nice idea for a sci-fi book: the trials and tribulations of humanity, an enslaved organic computational device for the artificial intelligence of the future. Take The Matrix and stir in some information network hyperbole. Throw in a plot twist where the artificial intelligence is actually god incarnate (controversy always sells books) and then round it off with the potential demise of humanity, ending with a witty Darwin quote. Don't kill us off though... you might want to milk a sequel (although prequels are so much cooler).

If you are wondering WTF I am on the answer is caffeine. Caffeine and 17 hours straight of content writing to be precise.

Once they have worked out the last kinks in "Synthetic Crystal" growing we WILL have a singularity data storage medium.

The amount of info that a Crystal can hold is off the charts. It's not affected by magnetic fields and the storage life is infinite as well.

No concerns about temperature (Short of Lava or Liquid Nitrogen.), humidity, magnetic fields, water, dirt, or oily finger prints either. These ARE concerns for current disc data and USB drive's shelf life.

Remember the movie "Superman"? It'll be similar to what "Krypton" used to store their info prior to their sun going super nova. (But smaller.)

The reading devices will only be limited by the size and shape of the opening. If they were to be "Unitized" you could just put the crystal into ANY device with a reader/writer. (Use your imagination here.)

So "Discs" & "Flash Drives" are already heading for the "Cliff of Extinction".

Sincerely,

MT

if you're getting more than 10 movies to a disc, then the codec used is going to suck balls.
Sounds like they were compressed for use on an iPhone or something.

I'm with the guy that says he has backups he'll never even look at again. I remember my first hard drive held 5MB. I never thought I'd fill it up. Now I fill 150 GB backup with no effort.

If there was only a way to easily catalog all that stored info.

The point of backup isn't to look at it again.
It's so that you've got it there in case your primary storage method fucks up in a major major fashion.
Jesus, if you want to keep it all, get a multiple HDD mount that does cascading storage and allows you to simply replace drives with higher capacity units as you run out of space on it. I recommend a Drobo for just that, if you happen to have eSATA (which any modern computer should)
