I think most of the people who donated money towards this wouldn't have the skills to actually install and maintain it after it is released.
I think they like the general idea of having more control over their privacy but they don't realize that these guys idea just isn't feasible for the masses. |

Firefox can be installed within a few clicks, what they propose would take knowledge of hosting, or if they didn't wanna go that route - setting up their own machines to allow people to access their info, etc. Just won't happen.
I make a prediction that due to the massive donations they are getting they will change their gameplan and make whatever they are making easier for normal people to take advantage of. |

extremly difficult undertaking that is being done is a very organized way. i have to commend them for it, even if it doesn't pan out (which i think it actually might).

Once someone gets fed up with Facebook and they knew about this alternative, all they'd have to do is port their information over and then delete their Facebook account. This would bring in more people overall than them just starting from scratch, since most wouldn't leave Facebook from sheer annoyance of having to start over. If they could find a way to comment to their friends from Facebook via the other social network, then that'd also significantly increase their chances of being a Facebook killer. |

Get Money + Get Paid

they would have raised at least half a million if they didn't start directing people to other projects. As it stands they will end up with around 200k . Pretty decent for something most people think is going to be a difficult undertaking.
For this thing to work it needs to be installed in like 2-3 clicks in under 5 minutes, have the most simple interface of all time, and have extensive viral promotion (like facebook did) I hope they take some of that money and hire brillant UI folks |

I could hardly believe the amount of money diaspora got through kickstarter... if you were following though, 100k+ of that money came AFTER they were toted in a NYT article.
Facebook privacy was a huge issue at the time... this "company" solved that "problem"... and NYT ran with it. 24 hours later, they had made over $100k in donations. Pretty good marketing if you ask me.

Been following this Diaspora stuff for a while now... and guess it's useless to discuss if Facebook is good or bad or what they must change, we are talking about another option that could be or not, a better one, Diaspora.
It will always catch my attention the possibility to do as I want with all my info, ideas and thoughts with no need to sign an agreement that takes from me everything that I post and Diaspora sounds like that option... on the other hand, everything that enters the www can be reached by someone... I actually want to believe that people have no idea about Facebook T&C otherwise they really don't care about privacy, and I am not talking about blocking this guy or the other dude, I am talking about copyrighted material. The question is if everyone knows about Facebook T&C Cheers! |
