For those of you keeping score, the term is in the 20k range (EM), and the page is currently in the 50s.
 
I have one question, what counts as being on the first page?

Is it when my site briefly bounces to number 10 for a day and then bounces back down to 25 or does it have to sit there for a week first?

1. kw: very competitive (~65 mio results)- position 35
2. kw: a bit competitive (~3 mio results) - position 27

The sites will rank at least a few weeks. Usually medium and lower competitive keywords can stay on the first page for up to a couple of months with no additional backlinks or work. High competition keywords can require a monthly package or additional backlinking of your own. - But in terms of will your keyword be on the first page for just a day or a couple, no... It will be up a couple weeks at least.

Just an update... we are just 4 days into this and I see my site has dropped from page 7 to page 9 for the keyword we are after. Hopefully this is just some flux in the gorgs algo???

This is normal, it is called the "google dance" and it happens when new backlinks are applied to a site.

It's a good sign because it means Google is paying
attention to the site, which will only help its rankings as we get farther
into the project.
 
Just a quick overview (two foreign keywords):
1. kw: very competitive (~65 mio results)- position 25
2. kw: a bit competitive (~3 mio results) - position 24

Nice results for one week!
