Look beyond the obvious
|
I know this has been covered before, but there are a lot of conflicting views and the threads were a while back.
I initially want to run a few blogs (using wordpress; a host with fantastico that makes operations fast would be great) to force me to sharpen my design and development skills. Along side these blogs I will begin dappling in affiliate marketing - setting up landing pages and the sort. I think it would make more sense to go with hosting that is convenient for the short-term - at least until i gain a fuller understanding of online marketing requirements - and then change over, if neccessary. So what kind of hosting and host would you recommend? Thanks in advance! |

Dreamhost affiliates can create this kind of coupons and they can offer part of their commision in the coupon (the commission is $97 so the max value a coupon can have is $97 - I recommend using one of those as it is the best option in my opinnion) or extra features like domains or space (which also reduces the ammount of the commission received by the affiliate ).

With all of the problems DreamHost has had recently, I am surprised people still suggest them, but I digress.
I'd go with HostICan, MidPhase, or LunarPages since they offer pretty solid cpanel backends. I have 1-2 accounts with each of these companies. I really like the stability of HostICan. Incredible servers. |

First post, and ... no.
Go with the host that seems right for you. Test their support times. Ask for uptime statistics, ask for uptime SLA's (both network & hardware). Ask for a support response guarantee. Do your homework before jumping towards a host.

Hostgator will be fine for you and includes fantastico. Do a search for "hostgator coupon" and you should fine a code for your first month free... usually it's "iceishot" or "jury".
Sounds like you are just starting out and making a small site so you won't need much bandwidth.

Well, I really can't say that Dreamhost is the best but the hosting worked great for me (about downtime - I know all about it I only had 1-3 downtimes and all only for a few hours - once with the power outtage and once with a DNS problem on Dreamhost servers, but I know other people had many more, I guess is a matter of luck) and for $22/year+1 free domain I still consider it a good choice for somebody just starting out, of course moving to a better solution later (VPS maybe?).
Also thank you guys for your opinions I will use them also as I was thinking of trying some other hosts besides the ones I use now in the next weeks |

I am currently using hostgator and their service is excellent
I have the $10 plan (lots of domains) give them a try, and you don't need to pay for a full year, if you don't like them you can just move away there's actually plenty of good hosts, just don't trust hosting charts, the owners just put at the top those with the highest commissions

I use Dreamhost and I much prefer their panel to Fantastico. If you have any major problems with the server they put you on, just bitch loudly and often and they'll move you to one that's less crowded.
The only thing that blows is that WP hijacks the Dreamhost stats page and you have to add some new code into the htaccess file. Why WP hasn't fixed this over the last several recent upgrades, I'd really love to know. |

I hear a lot of shit against GoDaddy hosting, but I've personally had no bad experience with them. Hostgator is a pretty sound option too. And seeing as your in the UK, I would recommend heartinternet.co.uk. Bloody fantastic host, I've never experienced any downtime with them, but it is more pricey than hostgator, and its in pounds. lol

Domainers...

As for Dreamhost/HostGator... They are only good for hosting photos. Yes, they give you more space and bandwidth then you know what to do with but they cut you loose the second you start using any CPU power. Any host that oversells to the extent that they do is not worth it imo. When shopping around for hosting everyone always goes for the biggest package, forgetting that they will never use all the space or bandwidth. |

Google for "dreamhost sucks" and look at the results.
I use bluehost and they've been good to me. They recently added unlimited domain hosting, have cpanel/fantastico, and live chat support. -- hostgator: hmm...spotty, dont really like it. midphase/an hosting: they charge me an extra $2.99 for awstats per domain.. like WTF... --- media temple: grid hosting http://www.media-temple.net) this is the shit! $20/month. get a post Dugg and it'll remain standing.

I consider dreamhost and bluehost on the same overselling level as every big hosting services out there. Small host will provide you more friendly and better support imo.
Anyone here ever heard of amazon ec2 ? The offer from amazon is amazing: "a virtual machine is roughly equivalent to a system with a 1.7Ghz Xeon CPU, 1.75GB of RAM, 160GB of local disk, and 250Mb/s of network bandwidth (bursting to 1Gb)" and cost $0.10 per hour ($72 per month) plus bandwidth cost. You only pay as you using it. It's a shame that it is still in closed beta. |

I just recently got my own domain. I ended up with Powweb was like $60 for the year registered. Have had no problem with them but for a beginner it might seem difficult getting set up because they do not have a easy step for step for noobs. Look for hosting that offers the easiest set up and tools since you are new.

I still have that account by the way and I am pretty satisfied, they've handled days with 20.000/40.000 visits and i didn't even get an email from them

HostGator is way better than Dreamhost. BlueHost is definitely a reliable host that has great customer support. The main difference is that HostGator has many different plans for hosting and BlueHost only has one plan. Bluehost has 300GB space, 3,000GB bandwidth, host unlimited domains, and free domain. Both are reliable just go with which ever of the two better fits your requirements for now and where you think you may be in the future.

About 2 years ago, when I was first searching for hosting, my main concern was for it to be idiot proof. I first went to HostGator, but I was such a newb that I couldn't even figure that out. I was a web hosting virgin.
Next I went to HostMonster. I found it to be extremely easy. I still use Hostmonster for shared hosting and couldn't be happier. Unlimited add on domains, cheap and the customer service rocks. I hate talking to support over the phone (it's always some Hindu guy named Steve with a thick ass accent that I cannot understand). HostMonster has 24/7 live chat and I can always understand typing perfectly. Also I've never had to wait to get someone. It's always been quick and helpful. Just my two cents. |
