Question Absolute beginner questions

Hi,

Ok, I have spent a number of hours reading this forum, which has resulted in me realizing just how pathetically uninformed I am with regards to the entire 'AM' world.

I apologize for the inane and ridiculously newb questions, however I greatly appreciate any help.

Ok, here goes:

1)Where and how do you guys make your websites? I am not a programmer as I am sure many of you are not. Do you simply buy a domain, get hosting and use wordpress. (So should I be studying wordpress?) If not, how would you recommend I proceed?

2) What is the general step by step forest for the trees building process for newbs? Example: 1)buy, host domain, wordpress website. 2) Develop content 3) learn about and implement the marketing tacks discussed within this forum 4) Profit??

Basically, is there any step to step guide or overview for the complete newbie? I am disciplined student and honestly have no idea where to start. Even the newb section here is beyond my current scope of understanding.

Thank you sincerely for any help.

1)Where and how do you guys make your websites?
depends on what you are trying to do. Wordpress is one option though- not a lot to study, just read through their install guide and start playing with plugins

2) you answered yourself. pretty common sense really.

Just start doing it. There's lots of information on specific questions you may have as you go, but you don't need a guide or ebook. Pick a niche, a traffic source and run with it. When you get stuck post your question + tits here and get answers.

Thanks for taking the time to answer my question. I am having trouble figuring where/how to start. There is no 101 for this stuff I take it so I will have to learn it organically (doesn't seem as efficient as a guide. But perhaps this barrier to entry is beneficial, otherwise everyone and their grandma would be doing this.)

HI ddall,

I think maybe more research might be helpful.

The reason that you are so "lost", is not just a lack of knowledge but
that you have no direction; you do not yet know WHAT you want to
do except make money online. That's a pretty general goal.

Browse the web and see what others are doing. Check out some signatures
here in WF. When you see something interesting, notice how they do it,
wordpress or whatever. Ask yourself "how'd they do this?"

You say you have a degree in finance? Maybe a site loaded with info on that
would fire you up.

I dunno, I just have the feeling that you are without a specific goal.

imo,
Bompa

Thanks Bompa.

I have been reading nonstop all last night and yesterday.

You are correct in you analysis. I have narrowed it down to looking at a PPC campaign with a landing page, and currently trying to get on with an affliate network. I have registered a domain and acquired hosting to play around and learn wordpress and prosper etc. Unfortunately I do not know HTML and I am concerned that will be a problem. Do you agree?

There will be no need of html in wordpress, just install it and make your website first, its easy to use.
As well as it would be more good if you do keyword research first and then implement on-page optimization on your website ----> run PPC + SEO on your site.

You don't need to have any HTML or programming knowledge to work with WordPress, though it can come in handy when you run into problems.

Choose a topic that you have an interest in, use a keyword research tool to gauge it's profitability (Google Keyword Tool works fine), and create a nice-looking site/blog with WordPress for it.

Once it's looking good, start populating it with content, you can write it yourself or hire a freelancer. Publish content often and with consistency, an article every 1-3 days would be fine. Be sure to apply SEO techniques to your content (there are plugins for this).

Drive traffic to your site via social networking, SEO, guest posts on other blogs, there are a ton of ways to build an audience- keep experimenting.

Once you have a following, then you can start monetizing your traffic. I'm sure you've done your research in that department, the best method depends on your niche.

Also- don't talk about what niche you are pursuing on a forum like this- competition is fierce.

No.

Listen to xtraitx and Kstanki2, they are pointing you in the right direction.

Once you get your site up and running, you're biggest task is going to be getting your site out there. With the recent changes Google has made, it's going to take some time. The key is going to be link building and original content. There are many ways to achieve this, but those are pretty much the fundamentals of marketing your website (SEO) on Google.

Hope this helped!
Good Luck!

I agree with hsgerifield. Once you learn how to create a site, the real task starts, traffic. Traffic generation is the difficult part. If you build it, it won't just come.

You can't expect traffic to just start flowing to your site, you need to work your tail off to generate free traffic, or pay for traffic (which most people don't do when they are new)

Best of luck!

You only need to know enough to do whatever it is you're trying to accomplish at present, and a google search can help you accomplish that 99% of the time.

On a side note, you might want to consider ppvplaybook (changing their name to affplaybook i hear..??) or one of the other paid forums (stackthatmoney, IMgrind..). I know they have a beginner section with step by step videos for a lot of the basics; like making a basic landing page, where to get traffic, what kind of offers to look for, etc. And you'll get solid answers to your questions as you set up campaigns.

Definitely worth the money if you're looking for a quick start guide.

This comment should be stickied or bronzed or something, since so many people cry about how abusive this forum is to newbies.

Part of the challenge of offering any help at all is that your questions are so broad. The advice to just stick with WordPress is a good one, and I hope you take it -- WP really has revolutionised the way sites are rolled out, and taken a big burden off of people who are just getting started. But honestly, it was just a lucky coin toss that you didn't get dickrolled for asking "how do I set up a site?"

Some tips on being a successful WickedFire newbie:

"What network should I join?/Who's the best network?" FUCK YOU

"Which networks have PayPal as a payment option?/Which networks have the best [zip/cps/whatever] offers?/Which networks work with Filipino affiliate?/etc." WIN

"How to I make a landing page?" FUCK YOU

"I've tested headlines and images on my landing page, but don't see much difference either way in conversions. What should I test next?" WIN

"Help! I got ripped off by some douche in BST!" FUCK YOU

"There are so many linkbuilding services; anybody care to name your favourite?" SORT OF FUCK YOU BUT OK HERE'S SOME RECOMMENDATIONS

"My niche is pretty tight and ranking isn't too hard because most of the competition is amateur/hobbysit sites. Would I be better off spending my linkbuilding budget on fresh content so that I can focus my effort on other aspects?" WIN

etc. etc. etc.

I realise that generating specific questions can be pretty hard starting out, but you have to understand that while there are a few guides out there, and some are pretty good, almost everyone who has made any consistent money online in any niche has done so through just messing around with stuff and seeing what works. Sometimes the traffic comes in but it isn't monetisable; sometimes you have a great early success that you waste six months trying to repeat etc. You just have to get your hands dirty and start working, even if you don't have a clear idea on just what exactly you need to be working.

Try getting any kind of site up at all, and see if you can successfully get through the process of ordering a domain, installing WP, making tweaks to your settings and writing a few pages of content -- that will be the activity that helps you generate specific questions that tend to garner focused and helpful advice at WickedFire. You'd be amazed how many people here are very willing to kick in to your success, as long as you are willing to take the initiative and fuck some stuff up so we can help you fix it.

To tell the truth, beginners should use some more simple tools, that can bring more variants including long tail keywords. For example, I prefer to use more professional tools like keywordspy.com and freekeywords.wordtracker.com
