Ok, so I understand that on a very basic level making money online through SEO follows a simple plan of:

1. Find Keywords
2. Make site
3. Put quality content
4. inbound links/onpage seo
5. revenue from ads/offers

I would like to find a "correct" way of going about the first step, finding profitable keywords. Using the google keyword tool to find high CPC keywords doesn't necessarily work (or so I'm told).

I see quite a few people using SerpIQ, would this be something I should look into or is it not worth it for beginners?

Basically I'd like to know if there are any posts or guides on what is a more calculated (scientific?) way of going about finding good keywords.

I'm not asking for a handout or shitty guides just some solid advice.

I agree with mike. I use SERPIQ and look at how competitive the keyword is. If its under 35 SerpIQ its pretty easy to rank for. Then you base that off the search volume if its worth building backlinks for that keyword Cost to traffic ratio.

I just wanted to get some elaboration on this topic. I'm using Market Samurai, I started trying affiliate marketing about 3 or 4 years ago on and off without any success. My main sticking point was finding a micro niche. My filters in MS are set to 80 SEOT / 30k SEOC / 15% PBR. These filters are pretty strict IMO and I must have gone through generating and analysing 100s of keywords by now, and still all I have are some pretty weak keywords.

So what I'd like to know, what criteria do people set to find keywords? Is anything outside of the range above too difficult to work with or should I broaden the parameters a bit?

Regarding making EMD and the CI in Serp IQ. How do you distinguish those numbers.

I mean so 35 is easy to rank right, but does that mean 44 is medium or hard or is 44 also easy and like 75 is hard. What is the range?


Also do you have a matrix for finding a good EMD

That is probably what everyone will tell you in their "guide to success" or
in their blog post and certainly those things are important, but if you're
going to make it online, the most important thing to learn is how to get
traffic. Seriously, there are millions of IM'ers that have done those five
steps and don't earn a dime.

There is NO correct way. There are dozens of methods of calculating
keywords for this or for that. They are all just theories. They make great
blogging and super tutorials because they attract traffic. LOL

Google's Adword Keyword tool does not show traffic or queries, it shows
possible number of impressions if you place an ad. It is good to get a
general idea of the queries, but not good for calculations. Also, it's good
for brainstorming ideas.

There are plenty of post and guides, but their purpose is not really to
teach you, it is to get traffic to their site.

If any of these tools are recommended, fine, try them, but keep in mind,
"Where do they get their information?". Probably from Google's Adwords
tool. LOL Just like when people say they checked PR with three different
tools. There is only ONE place to get PR, from toolbarqueries.google.com.
(that will not work if you paste it into your browser)

And, these tools are NOT actually there in order to help you, their purpose
is to attract traffic.

So, what to do?

You have to be creative. Sorry, that's the best advice I can give.

I'm sure some will disagree with what I've said, that's fine, let's hear it!

If you're doing SEO, try getting comfortable with ranking easy stuff first, once you done that, put AdSense up and move on to tougher competition stuff.

Rankability is all relative, some people have more resources to build links, some people don't.

These tool use an api from Google Adwords so why not to use Google's tool directly?

I would recommend to read this article from SEOMoz.org, that describes Keyword research.

Not just this article they have bunch of different lessons for newbies and you will find links to those as well.. Hope this helps
