I have been checking out website competition and have noticed that sometimes the top ranking site has only a fraction of the backlinks as websites placed in second or third place. Is this purely because their site is better optimized or is there another reason?

Also, a niche whose websites have a few thousand backlinks is easy to penetrate? If no, how come?

It's not just the quanitity of the backlinks, but also the quality. You might have 5,000 PR0 links, but my one PR8 link where I'm the only link on the page is going to crush yours.

Yes Quality Backlinks Are always Matter....PR 6 Links Much Better Than PR0..

Is there a way to find out what quality back links my competition has? Also, does ration of referring sites matter?

Yes, the number of referring domains helps, because as you continue to keep getting more links from the same domain (and it works the same for links from the same page) you get diminishing returns. Each link becomes worth less and less.
