I constantly hear about people having a "list".. a list of what?

Mostly they are talking about a list of people that they email to.

So if someone signs up to receive emails... that person is now on the list.

People like to build 'their list' because you can continue to email and sell to that person 1) long after they've visited your website 2) even if your website drops out of Google for some reason.

A list of people who subscribe to your site for more information on your niche. They opt in through your webform which usually asks for a name and email address. A marketer will send out emails and try to promote products to that list.

It is usually a list of email subscribers that they will send out emails to in order to sell things.

I don't know specifically what kind list you are talking about as there are lot of types of lists. But mostly, it's related to the email subscribers.
