How is Affiliate Marketing different from Internet Marketing?

I don't know if this is the right forum to be asking this question or if the question is a stupid one. I have just recently gotten interested with working online and based from the little readings I've done, the most profitable jobs online are in Affiliate Marketing and Internet Marketing. How are these different from each other or can one be an affiliate marketer and internet marketer at the same time? Do I have to spend anything to become an established online marketer of sorts?

Internet marketing is more like a label... network marketing is "internet marketing". An affiliate marketer is an "internet marketer"... internet marketing is marketing over the internet. So yeah - an affiliate marketer is an internet marketer(if you are marketing online of course)

Tips: Find a niche market first - it will save you a lot of hassle. Also, I think others would agree that affiliate marketing (after you found your niche) is best for beginners.

Any online business will cost you around $70-$100+, depends. You need a website (with hosting and domain name), and an auto responder.

If you go "free" - you can for most things, but "free" = big limits that you don't want.

Avoid any hype and worship no guru.

You can pm me if you need more help.

Hope that helped!

A few thoughts & links for you.

Good question and this is the place to ask it.

First off, here are "my" definitions and differentiations of the two:

An Internet Marketer is anyone who sells something on the Internet. That could be a physical product, digital product, or service.

An Affiliate Marketer is anyone who PROMOTES someone elses product or service and then gets a commision for the referal.

Now the term Marketing in the simplist of terms means to PROMOTE and SELL. The entire process of Marketing is quite deep and complicated in actuality.

Yes, you will see people use the terms Affiliate Marketer (AM) and Internet Marketing (IM) interchangeably but that is incorrect.

You can look at Wikipedia for more info, but since it is user based it has gotten all convaluted with everyones theories.

The definitions I gave you above are the simple cut and dry differences.

Also, to answer the question of whether you can do/be both an Internet Marketer and an Affiliate Marketer, that is a definite YES.

You could sell items on eBay and be an Internet Marketer. Then at the same time you could setup websites to promote Click Bank products or Amazon products and be an Affiliate Marketer with them.

eBay, Amazon, and Click Bank will NOT cost you anything to get setup with. Just Google the subjects and then go to their sites.

Russ Nagamori has given you good advice above.

Unfortunately, other than say selling something you have on eBay or creating content for someone else and getting paid for it, there really is no QUICK CASH out there these days.

You have to LEARN a lot and you will learn best by just DOING and FAILING. Never be afraid to fail at something in this business.

To help you get started follow this link. (But keep in mind, Amazon Stores are NOT that profitable these days from what I've seen. BUT you will LEARN a TON by following this tutorial and actaully setting up a store.)

How to Build an Amazon Store with WordPress for FREE | WinkPress ;)

Just creating a site like this and getting it up and live will put you Light Years ahead of most people just starting out online. You will be able to use what you learn in this tutorial to setup most any kind of Wordpress (WP) site you want to promote almost anything. (Who knows, you might even make some money from the site.)

There are TONS of FREE tutorials and templates for Wordpress. Don't go paying for some GURU Crap (As Russ Nagamori said above, on Worpress tutorials.)

Also, if you know something about Torrents, you can go register for free at this site BizTorrents :: Signup. They have quite a bit of the GURU stuff there that you can get for free if you feel the need to look at it.

If you don't know about torrents just google it. Some torrents are legal and others infringe on copyright laws.

Just don't do like 99% of people new to internet marketing and get bogged down with all the information out there. It's better to TAKE ACTION and create something as soon as possible.

As stated above, do Market Research to find out what people are buying or want to buy and then find a product or service to promote to them.

You can also look in here for some pretty good stuff to help you get going and gain some more understanding. Enlightened Members - WickedFire - Affiliate Marketing Forum - Internet Marketing Webmaster SEO Forum

BTW, you can go here and start with the baby plan, just be SURE to pay MONTHLY!! Don't ever sign up for an annual contract with a hosting provider in the begginning of your online marketing endeavors.
Web Hosting - Shared cPanel Web Hosting

They have free tutorials to help you learn how to use the administrative features of your hosing account.

I would also suggest NOT taking the "so-called" FREE domain registration with a Hosting Provider. Trust me, it can be a REAL PAIN to actaully get it and transfer it later if you want to.

It's better to go with a separate Domain Name registrar like NameCheap.
Bure sure to also get Private Registration with your domain name so that your personal information is not available to anyone who looks up your domain Name.

You might also find this link of use to learn how to setup an environment on your home computer to test out your web sites before uploading them to your hosting provider. Setting Up a Local WAMP Server on Windows 7 | | Aggressive WebAggressive Web

I just reread your post. It shouldn't cost you anything to get with a larger ad network, but you will need to have a functioning site and established traffic or a good large list in most cases.

Which leads me to "List Building". Reasearch this subject to learn just what it is and how to do it right.

This can be one of your most imortant online activities if done right for long term money making.

You will need an account with someplace like Email Marketing Software & Email Marketing Services from AWeber so that you're compliant with email laws. This is also where the Auto Responders that were mentioned above can be put into use.

You will want to also learn about Squeeze Pages. Aweber has free templates you can use as part your account with them.

Just be SURE to do a regular backup to your local computer or cloud storage of your email lsit data base. this way "YOU" always have an updated copy of in case something happens or you want to change providers.

While I'm at it here, you might also want to check in eJunkie. It might come in handy for you depending what wind up doing online.

One last thing, since you're just starting out you will want to at least get a PayPal account. I would suggest a Business Account with them.

Remember Google is your friend and there is plenty good FREE information to be found to help get you started.

I wish you well in you endeavors.

Thank you so much! I didn't know there are TONS to learn about internet/affiliate marketing :( I'll be sure to check out the links provided. I guess if I want to earn from this venture, I need NOT ONLY to work hard but also to shell out some substantial amount of money. I just hope it would be worth all the effort and time (and cash!)

Thanks for enlightening us on this matter. I too have difficulty figuring out the difference between the two.

To start out should not have to cost you a lot of money. So long as you have a computer and internet access you can actually start out with no money if you go to someplace like Click Bank and then promote products with your affiliate links posted in articles that you write for article sites like ezines.

Though not as profitable as it use to be, you can still give it a shot and it won't cost you anything.

Ok, so let's give this a quick run down for intial costs to start out VERY basic and do it with the minimal that you really should have.

1.) Hosting- $8 a month for a decent starter account with unlimited domain name hosting and (So-Called) unlimited traffic on shared hosting. I say so-called because if your site does well and the traffic gets to high you will HAVE to up grade your hosting to at least a VPN at that time. Which is actually a GOOD thing provided the traffic is earning you money.

BTW, VPN (Virtual Private Netwrok) on a hosting provider just means that you'll have/should have at least ONE dedicated IP address (Not shared with others on the computer they have your site on.) and that they will setup a VIRTUAL computer to run your site with dedicated resources to handle your traffic and programs. They can increase your virtual space as you grow quite easily but of course it will cost you more money to have a better more powerful VPN. There is really NO NEED for a VPN to start out. It's very easy to transfer your site up to a VPN when the time comes.

2.) Register a Domain Name- About $12 annually with "Private Registration" for a TLD (Top Level Domain) such as .com, .net or .org

Now, keep in mind that after you register that domain name and set it up on your Hosting Provider you can have an UNLIMITED number of subdomains created on that ONE NAME for FREE. (Provided you get a hosting package that allows this, the one suggested above does.) No need to register anything or pay again.

While it is usually better to have separate domains for for each different thing you promote, you can still do QUITE well by using a subdomain.

"I" actually like using sub-domains when promoting other people's stuff in case they quit offering the item. If that happens, I just save all the pages from the subdomain onto an external drive (You never know when you might be able to put all that created content to use again for something else.) and then delete the subdomain. No fuss no muss and now I don't have a DEAD EMD (Exact Match Domain) laying around that I have renew each year or to let it die and be out the registration fees..

The other thing I like about subdomains is that you can name it pretty much whatever you want and NOT have to try and register something you want only to find that it is taken.

Here's an example. Let's say you wanted to promote "Fleshlights". Well if you go try to register the Domain Name Fleshlights you'll see that all common TLD's are all taken. But, lets say you registered and own the domain name 123.com for example.

Well, now you just go ahead and make fleshlights.123.com as a subdomain. Then you would setup pages under that subdomain and then do your SEO (Search Engine Optimization) for you keyword and now the keyword is the first word of you subdomain as well. (Learn about Robot.txt files and what they do.)

You can also setup promotions in subdirectories if you like. 123.com/fleshlights and then your pages would go into that folder. And you'd do the same as above. But "I" prefer to use subdomains or separate domains as they're much easier to transfer if needed due to growth/traffic.

3.) Get Autoresponder: Aweber- $19 a month and right now (at the time of this post 3-26-2012.) it would seem they are offering a $1 first month trial. Again, until you are established and have decided just how you're going to be making money online you should pay this MONTH to MONTH as well. (Try to stay away from contracts that will have you STUCK and immobile just to save a few bucks.)

4.) GET a CMS (Content Management System)- Wrodpress is FREE and the easiest to find info on.

I also like Drupal, but for just starting out WP will be your best bet. Drupal is a little more Robust in "my" opinion and both WP and drupal are PHP based systems. (I put the link here just to let you know it's out there and would a familiar option after having used WP for when your sites get HUGE!! GRINNN ;)

So, let's see here....at the time of this post you can get a Domain Name with private registration, Hosting with unlimited traffic (Cough, Cough,...but don't worry you'll be fine. lol) and unlimited domains and subdomains and an Aweber account with an auto responder and FREE sign up/Opt-In templates for...................wait for it.......... A Grand Total of ...

$21 U.S.D to begin as the UP FRONT costs.

Then it would be around $30 a month to have your site/sites up with an auto responder and the ability to start GROWING A LIST!! (
Less than ONE pizza night at my place or about a HALF TANK of gas these days!!)

But, the good news is that you can start without Aweber, so it would be $20 get started and then about $8.50 a month thereafter.

So, there you go. It works out to about $360 a year for hosting and an Autoresponder service. Then the annual domain registration fee and the Private Registration fee which comes to around $12.

$375 a year total for the solid basics. or $102 hosting+ $12 domain name = $114 a year for the BARE minimun. (Yes, I rounded UP but did not include taxes in my calculations. I add THIS for the MATH CRITICS on WF!!! Lulz)

So, to get started won't cost that much "money" at all.

TIME to learn, DO, and TEST will be your largest investment to Begin with.

You DON'T need Market Samurai, Xrummer, SEnuke, or PEMIUM themes to start out. TRUST me, the time it will take you to learn how to even use these and other simalar tools properly when you first start out will HURT your intial money making more than they could ever help you right now.

As you create sites and promote stuff you'll start to understand how things work and then at a later time you might want to invest in such tools. No sense in getting those tools before you understand how web marketing even works in the real world. Only after some time of doing this will you be able to really understand what those tools do and how they do it for you.

I know this all sounds like so mcuh to take in, but when it's taken ONE STEP AT A TIME and in the PROPER order you'll see that it makes sense and will be MUCH simpler for you to do than it seems now.

Take Care and I wish you well

Good Luck!!!! (Keep in mind that the more you do this, the LUCKIER you get!! Lulz)

P.S. I almost forgot...here's an Affiliate Marketing glossary link for you: Affiliate Marketing Glossary - Affiliate Insider - Website Magazine You can sign up for a FREE bi-monthly subscription here that they'll mail to you. The info they give out is usually about a minimum of 6 months BEHIND what's currently happening. But it's a pretty good resource for someone just starting out.

P.S.S. If you want to sell PHYSICAL products yourself online, you can check into World Wide Brands. They are a RELIABLE and TESTED source for products and they've got a lot of FREE info and Tutorials on their site that you can use.

You can follow this LINK to their sales/sign-up page for the regular price and no affiliate link.

OR

Here's a link to their sales/sign-up page with a discount. (It's a Ryan Moran affiliate link I swiped by doing a google search just now. But hey you get a $20 discount with it if you want to join. )

DISCLAIMER: None of the above links are any of "my" affiliate codes!! ROFLMAO!!!!

Sorry, no GURU HYPE of warm & fuzzy "Easy Money" CRAP from me....only real world info

Thank you so much! I didn't know there are TONS to learn about internet/affiliate marketing :( I'll be sure to check out the links provided. If you know how to use a browser, a word processor, and are able to copy files you can get started with these BASIC skills.

I said TONS to learn after "me" thinking back to where "I" was in 2004 and what I know NOW.

There is a heck of a lot more information available now then there was back then.

You will LEARN as you go. Each time you get to a certain point/end of your current knowledge you'll seek out the info you need to move forward and hence learn as you go.

OR

You can pay someone (Outsource) to do the things you don't know how to do.

As has been said many times here, you either invest MONEY or TIME to get ahead in this business. If you're short on money you will invest time. If you're short on time you will have to invest MONEY.

If you have both Money and Time to invest you will get ahead that much quicker.

To get started you can use templates and available plugins for your sites.

So, you won't have to know HTML, PHP, Mysql, CSS, Java, jQuery, or Ajax languages to create your sites. But in the future you will want to know some of these or at least be familiar with their protocals.

If you are unfamiliar with Linux Operating Systems I "strongly" suggest you do become familiar with how that OS handles it's FILE SYSTEM. If you only know how Windows works you might struggle when trying to change the pages of your website since 90% of servers/hosting companies use a Linux based file system.

Again, you CAN get by in the beginning without this knowledge.

Son't let what I've post in here discourage you. Just know that it will take some time and effort, but it will be worth it so long as you STICK with it and TAKE ACTION!!!

Taking ACTION and not just cruising around online reading stuff all day is what will get you ahead and in a position to start making money online.

TTFN (Ta Ta For Now!! It's a TIGGER THING!! lol)

Midas Touch just explained it well.

I couldn't agree with you more! Midas Touch just saved me a lot of reading time on the subject. Thanks again, Midas Touch. :)

The things you mentioned can be overwhelming for someone new like me, but as you've said, I have to take it one step at a time. As I write this, I am also researching on the IM/AM jargon that I knew next to nothing before. Hopefully, I will learn as I go - it's the only option. :D
