Option C is not directly comparable

A way to do it is to see your EPC.

Your EPC should be $20 times 4%=$.80

Option A cost $.40 epc
Option B cost $.20 epc so it is the best

What does cpm means? Cost per million? $.35 per million impression>?

Here's why:

You have $500 to spend and you're considering different places to spend it. The offer you are promoting pays $20, and the CPA company claims that it converts at 4%

Option "A" - Banner that gets 5,000,000 impressions monthly, costs $500, and has an average CTR (according to the site owner) of 0.025%

Option "B" - PPC campaign where the clicks will cost $0.20 each

Option "C" - CPM banner on a popular site, costs $0.35 CPM. Over the course of one month, you can expect to get a maximum of 1,000,000 impressions

So, what are some of the numbers you need to know to make an informed decision?

Also, which option is the best?

I'll post the answer later today.

CPM stands for Cost Per Mille, which means Cost Per Thousand.

Wait a minute. That option C is still not comparable. So for 1000 impression you pay .35

In one month you would pay $350 right because you get 1 million impression.

The thing is you don't know your clickthrough. So you don't know how many people click your links? So how do you compare? Test and try I guess.

You earn a total of $1000 from option A. Minus the cost of $500. Your profits are $500.

Option B you earn $2000 and minus the $500 cost, you earn $1500

Option C you earn $800,000 minus $350, you earn $799,650

Hope my maths is correct.

I know option B has the best ROI, but what if you only get a couple of clicks? Options A and C give you an expected amount of traffic, whereas B provides no info on this.

Otherwise, this is a good exercise IMO.

Only because I am diligent. Anyone can do even better. Also I learn math the right way. When my employee ask, how the hell I still remember how to compute probability of having 4 six in 10 dice draw, I told him the truth. You must not remember anything in Math. All are common sense.

Now let me try to understand the above complicated calculation.

Each offer pays $20. So we got $20/lead. However, conversion is 4%. So we got $20/lead * 4 lead/100 click and after crossing things out you got let's see, I got to summon my calc, 80 cents/click. That's our EPC. Wow. I am learning something. Thanks a lot.

Then there is 1 million impression. How did you get the .1/100 again? It must be the CTR but where is it mentioned that the CTR is .1/100? That's what I was missing.

I just started doing AM and I had no idea that math was involved in all this... I was one of the idiots that fell into the EBook scam and didn't really learn shit... cause all this time, I thought that to make it into a business, all you needed was traffic to your site, never considered all this stuff... need to keep reading.

Thanks Mike

What kind of mathematics do online marketers actually use? I met a guy at AdTech in San Fran at the PPC.Biz party who was brilliant with math. Really knew how to use statistics and data to enhance his media buying.

That excel sheet calculator EXCELLENT! /hug

This reminds me of a keyword research tactic.

Get 1000 keywords (exact match) and paste them in excel.
*0.3 (traffic from 1st position of google)
*0.2$ ($ / adsense click, average $ / hoplink etc)
*CTR (5-10-15% etc)

Just downloaded the spreadsheet and it's golden. I can appreciate it and it's something all of us marketers should have on hand at all times. I'm going to play with the numbers a bit and pay more attention to the numbers. Thanks again.

This is a great thread! I have a degree in math, though I admit these problems were a little bit of a challenge for me as I haven't used my degree in my field of work for 12 years. Also, My focus was on more theoretical math (think 4th dimensional calculus) rather than applied business math. I'm kicking myself now for not taking those classes.

Thank you for the spreadsheet!! Now to my calculator

I'll admit my maths isn't the best but I've been studying hard and pretty proud to say that I managed to work out the correct answer
