Barring the purchasing of links, what would you guys say is the best FREE method of SEOing your blog posts/sites. I need to pitch something to my boss here soon...

Goog Alerts for your main keywords/industry keywords, drop links on those articles/sites.

Drop good links. Remember anchor title tags, anchor the keyword, not 'click here'.

Write awesome articles/content (video, images, etc.) that aren't linked to in your main site, but push links to the main site, use Sitemaps to let Goog know they're there.

Depends on what you're doing. Try blog carnivals, do-follow blogs/sites, Press releases and the like. If you know of friendly sites, possibly send a personal email asking for a linkn but don't hold your breath...

Depending on what it is, you could try to engineer some flash-in-the-pan traffic.
Do something outrageous that gets the blogosphere going on about you for a week or so.

Adding to the Google Alerts suggestion...

Depending on what your business/service/product/website is about you might be able to use Google Alerts to contact some websites and either get an article written about your business/service/product/website or exchange links. But as already suggested, you can also drop a link on those sites which is quick and effective.

Not sure what your company site(s) are about but you can make 30 sec to 1-min videos about them and use a mass submit video tool like TubeMogul.com - Online Video Distribution and Analytics

Google loves video sites and you can get ranked pretty easily for longer tail keywords.

As already mentioned Google is your best SEO resource, use WMT, use it to find sites and articles to comment one and build up a list of relevant linking sites.
