Just joined the forum and had a nooooob question here. What would be the best way for me to go about choosing publishers?

Generally, I'd make sure I've finished my manuscript, have a snappy title, and make sure I didn't go with any of the literary tropes that were set down by J.K. Rowling or Dan Brown. Then attempt to push the first chapter to some of those short fiction magazines...
