I have been reading this website for hours...it seems others new to this know much more than I. Where does someone get started? Seems I need an industry dictionary just to decipher your terms! I am not a programmer so many of the posts are way over my head. I thought about buying an Affiliate Marketing type course for beginners...is this a good idea? I don't have a lot of money to invest but I do have a lot of time (I hope!). Any suggestions on how I can get started are appreciated (or is this market already so saturated that it isn't worth the effort?). Thanks.
P.S. I am not dumb, just ignorant. |

There's no need to buy a beginner's course...there's lots of free information available out there. Try this for starters: Drastic Tactics - Affiliate Marketing, Contextual and Other Advertising Strategy and Tactics.

i was (am) a complete noob when I started posting here in Nov. - just read through the stickies, stick with this site each day, and eventually you will start to learn the lingo.
I can't code well either, but if you buy a cheap wysiwyg page maker (I use netobjects fusion, but I'm sure there are better ones out there, or free shit) - you will be fine for creating arb pages for sure, and aff pages after using the program for a while. any programs i need made I am budgeting for hiring rent-a-coders, etc. i actually don't mind coding- i used to love programming way back in HS, but as of now w/ a full time job i don't have time to learn enough - i'd rather spend it learning the ropes and then hire out cheap labor, and then make money... at least for now anyway- i do plan on learning at least basic scripting skills when i can.

Thanks to all for the feedback
Sounds like good advice. I think I really need to find a glossary of terms though. For example, I do not know the difference between the arb and the aff pages?? I believe your comment regarding "learning the ropes" makes sense for me as well. Thanks again.

Forums are probably the best place to learn. Googling things like affiliate marketing will just get you a ton of sales pitches and junk. I suggest you try reading Street Smart Internet Marketing - it explains the whole 'doing business on the net' thing really well. And there's a glossary

Be careful not to get into the habit of constantly researching and never actually applying it like many do.
You don't need to be an expert to start making money. Try looking for what you need to know most to get to the next step and take some time to apply it. It takes a long time for search engines to update stuff so you'll want to get something up as soon as you can and improve it as you go. There's a lot if info out there and it can get overwhelming for someone new. Another suggestion to just reading, would be to do some searches on the video sites like Google Video. Run some searches like Affiliate Summit, SEO, ...etc. and you can even watch tutorials or lectures by the so called 'experts' of the industry. Good luck

twifire...
thanks for the input! I am a bit overwhelmed but am going to pursue your suggestion on the videos. I don't even know enough to be dangerous yet! I have no website and have no idea how to build one (no prior experience in that) and am not sure yet what I want to market. No idea. I don't have a place to park a website yet. I am not sure if I want to try something from Clickbank or where. I think I need to shop around more. Not sure if I want to promote something I have not tried, or a product I know nothing about. I mean I am at the VERY beginning of this but I really want to pursue it.
Also wondering if I should just start out with a one page site promoting one product or do I want a theme type page site where I have multiple pages and support mulitiple products. I realize I am going to probably have to start small. I don't have a bunch of cash to throw into this. Can you tell I am confused? I hope I will figure it all out eventually. DUH!!! Maybe I should just start doing something....anything huh? Thanks again... |

Chasing the long tail

5 years ago, I threw $50 at the internet on a lark when my father-in-law said he was going to advertise his real estate website on the web. I got back almost $1000. Needless to say, I threw another $50 at it.
At the time, I was waiting on the SEC to sign off on the launch of a new investment vehicle I was going to launch, and the freaking lawyers took almost a year. In the mean time, I ended up starting a company based off that first $50, then took a job as head of a Fortune 500 companies internet marketing, and finally broke off as a super affiliate. I cant code worth shit, I am not creative, I cannot even write very well (although I have never been accused of being concise) yet I make a damn good living off the internet. Moral of the story - to borrow from SEOBlackhat Do it Fucking Now. He could not be more correct. Some way shape or form find a few hundred dollars and take a flyer. If you wait until you think you know everything then you will talk yourself out of some good ideas. |
