I am Australian and of course my Google defaults to google dot com dot au, if I want to search google dot com to see what my competitors are doing in the USA what must I do? Do I require a proxy?

Hotspot Shield will do the job, or UltraSurf.

Going to google.com/ncr or google.us will give you USA results, but not USA ads from Adwords - you need a USA IP to see these.
