Any idea whether it matters who shares your the link? ie is there any info about whether Google determines whether someone who shares has 1 friend or whether the person that shares has many friends and is considered "influential"?

Good question. As with anything else there's alot of speculation out there. Particular FB account link weight will probably be a factor down the road if it's not yet. But who knows what the magic numbers are/will be.

Maybe a Facebook expert on WF can help out. Are the number of connections to a profile/page etc. publicly available? The only tools I know of are the graph and linter, but neither shows the number of friends. I'm pretty sure you need to be logged into Facebook to see the number of friends a profile has and while that's not a difficult task, there is again a difference between real, influential friends and fake profiles. If Google were to do this, would they have to create their own map of Facebook connections?

Yeah facebook shares and web pages like is something big in demand. I'll be starting something sweet in june sometime. Things have been so busy lately, didn't get the time to integrate with the current facebook likes service. But I am definitely gonna start something of that on a big scale

they said that more influential twitter accounts would have more weight so probably not a stretch they will apply that to fb as well.

If they know what your friends rate favourably they can aggregate that data. It seems they are using the contacts to link people and publicly available data from social networks. But while they specifically mention twitter in the post, they don't mention Facebook. Maybe it's b/c they don't want to give good publicity to Facebook but maybe it is because they don't have access to the data on an individual level. If that is the case, then it shouldn't matter if a real influential shares an article or a fake profile shares an article (other than the likelihood that other people subsequently share).

The final model performs moderately well, with the correlation coefficient between actual and predicted shares at 0.73. Takeaways

Facebook shares, at least as related to Google searches, act as a sort of "super-metric", encompassing a variety of different factors (similar to SEOmoz's Page Authority and Domain Authority).
Don't stop sharing and generating brand engagement through Facebook! Driving deeper engagement through social media can only help your brand and likely has other positive benefits (by generating tweets or links, for example).
Earning Facebook shares (probably) will not directly boost your Google rankings (though it may have positive effects that indirectly promote links, tweets and other signals Google may use).
