What is DirectAdmin?

DirectAdmin is an alternative to the popular cPanel control panel. Most people have never even heard of it, let alone tried it out, but in my opinion it's superior to cPanel in almost every way. Can I host the same things on this server as on your cPanel servers?

Yes and no. If you didn't read the update in my other thread, we changed the ToS. We no longer allow adult content or any type of blackhat sites. In fact, people who sign up lately seem to think our shared servers are theirs to abuse, so I repeat: Nothing shady and nothing resource intensive on our servers (DirectAdmin or cPanel).

Okay Sites: Wordpress (not autoblog 100 install versions... just simple wordpress), phpbay sites, static sites, landing pages, low traffic prosper202 sites, etc...

Not Okay Sites: Scrappers, comment spammers, sites with stolen content, anything that's resource intensive, etc...

I get this question every time I make a new thread or bump my old one... Let me just answer it publicly (I've already done so, but maybe not on WF)...

Why aren't you charging more for the plan? It doesn't make sense.

From day one the plan was to offer super cheap plans to everyone we could for the first year. Anyone that signs up during our first year, gets to keep their plan at the price they signed up for, for as long as they remain a customer.

We're doing this to build a customer base and gain word of mouth referrals.

After this summer all new plans will go up in price. Probably twice the price of what we offer them for now.

i remember my first reaction to cPanel back in the day was absolute repulsion... not sure exactly why - but was not impressed with it. then i got used to it and could navigate pretty quickly and dealt.

i'm no DA fanboi, but it seems light, easy to navigate, and fast. thanks for the great deal!

I snagged a cpanel account the other day just to have basically. Are you ever going to have a plesk server? I find plesk is fantastic for managing many sites.

Whats worse, is now that I have checked my email, I have two invoices from zensix, but no hosting account.

Not impressed. They could have at least used lube.

If they don't want my business fine, but don't send me invoices for products/services that were never delivered.

I should have just used a proxy or VPN from one of my other servers to sign up. It's sad when you have to scam in order to not be labeled a scammer.

Not unless someone holds a gun to my head or offers me tons of money. I personally hate Plesk more than cPanel.

Plesk is bloated as hell and slow... It's pretty though.

I just looked into this for you... It could have easily been fixed if you would have read the first section of the getting started guide. It says:

Once you've completed the sign-up process our system will automatically run a fraud check. If your order gets stopped because of fraud, just open a ticket and we will manually approve you.

But instead of submitting a ticket, you tried to order over and over again, creating three invoices all together. Invoices still get generated when you get flagged for fraud, because we can go back and manually approve the invoice to let you pay.

Which we sent you an e-mail about.

In fact, my support guy Chris told you in the e-mail that you could log in to the client area and pay the invoice (he deleted the other two you generated).

Anywho... your IP was from Taiwan and your billing address was from Colorado... that normally screams FRAUD and any host that would have allowed that order would be getting screwed daily. We get a minimum of 3 fraud attempts from Taiwan daily.

I'm impressed so far. The back end seems to be really quick. I'm not sure if it's the server or the Direct Admin script, but it snaps from page to page with authority.

The point is: Put the damn geo on your homepage or somewhere BEFORE the shopping cart. Don't make me give my personal info and one of my domains, then bill me two times, only to call me a fraud and block my account.

Or, better yet, use the algorithms as tools and have an actual human review and process invoices and new domains like most good hosting companies do. There wasn't even an email verification done, nor was there a whois ran before immediately labeling my app fraudulent.

I have signed up and have been approved for many hosts/networks/registrars etc.. from this IP. Most reputable businesses understand that people travel and even work in other countries.

I have been dealing with hosting companies for over 9 years now. I shouldn't have to read some BS "getting started guide" to open a simple shared hosting account. Anyway, go find an account with one of those other hosts you love so much. If you can't read the getting started guide (which we tell you to do before ordering) and you can't reply to my support guy when he sends you an e-mail trying to help.... then you'd probably send in a million trouble tickets anyway and be more trouble than you're worth.

We have hundreds of WF members as clients and you are the first one to cry about an automated fraud prevention system (bitch to maxmind.com, they're the one's that say not to allow you).

I've deleted your billing account and invoices.

Subigo - I apologize for my posts regarding your service. I over-reacted and it was wrong to post here without first giving zensix more of a chance to either cancel the billing or deliver the services. It looks like the billing has now been canceled.

I got really pissed off when I had checked my mailbox to find two invoices for services that were not going to be delivered. I wrongly assumed you were going to keeping billing and actually expect payment. I should not have got so angry, but I did. Some days my fuse is shorter than others. Sorry for directing it at you. If there is no scam involved, this is a good offer and its nice of you to share it on WF.

On a side note, I did only sign up two times, and only receive two invoices, but I understand that using the "back" button on sign-up pages/scripts can sometimes have unexpected results like this.

Good luck and I apologize for my handling of this.

Yeah, I originally had the space set to 1,200MB, but had to cut it after thinking hard about it. We always get people trying to setup warez and movie sites, so I cut the space in half to keep them away... Once the $10 price tag goes up and everything settles down, I'll probably bump the space back up for everyone.

Thanks for that... and sorry if I came off as a dick, but I've mentioned the possible fraud flagging of new accounts on here many times. We actually need all of the users information before we send the order over to maxmind.com to be checked, they require it. I can't apologize for that... while most hosts get hit everyday, we haven't had a successful fraud signup since we started.

I have a ton of PM's to go through, but see you sent me another one. I'll reply to you when I get a chance and I'll set up an account for you if you're still interested.

Crap. Yeah, I should have stated that the wickedfire coupon in my other thread is only good for the cPanel accounts. I'm not sure why the system is even accepting the coupon at all. It should have said not available for this plan, blah blah blah... I'll have to look into it.

p.s. - The coupon WILL be good once the price goes up in the future. (After the 50 account promo).

for multiple sites - i'm not as keen. the extra click when i click home to go back to my default domain is annoying - is there a setting to make home default to the default domain, then if i want domains, i click the domains link?

also, uploaded some plugins and they had some permissions issues so i had to go in and chmod those - where can i set the default upload permissions? i haven't noticed an issue with this on my cPanel installs.

so that's it thus far. if this is me just being an idiot - a reply by pm will suffice. thanks!

just reread this and looks whiny and bitchy - i'm digging it except for these two things. quick and nimble it seems.

It's the same way with cpanel, as they are treated as "add on" domains. Naturally this problem goes away when you have a WHM/Cpanel setup. But he's selling shared hosting not reseller accounts which wouldn't have the WHM access.

In Short : its a rather minor annoyance when you consider the price

PS: Depending on the FTP client you can often times set permissions via that.

The "pick a domain" thing has always been like that as far as I remember. There might be a way to change it, but I'll have to look into that one...

As for the chmod issues, it's most likely your ftp client. I haven't had any issues... what were you installing?

With that said, this server is set up in a complete different way than the other ones we use and there are some differences (php.ini vs .htaccess as an example).

using the same ftp client (smart ftp) that i used with my mega zen package on ur other box - no issues at all there. uploaded cforms and noticed that it wasn't able to write the css file. so went in and did some chmoding.

but yeah - that pick a domain is a mild annoyance, but one nonetheless - if you find that, i'm a convert. lol!

I looked around and I'm pretty sure there's no way to have a single domain's panel show up by default. It's like this because unlike cPanel, the additional domains that you add are not "under" a main domain. It keeps them all separate and you can delete any domain you want and still have the others working, even the domain you first signed up with.

As for chmod settings... unless you're using the autoinstaller you'll have to chmod certain files for scripts. (You sure cforms worked fine on the cpanel server? I have it set up on prblaze.com and had to chmod the stylesheet as well)... but...

You can set default chmod values in your .htaccess file in the root directory by using this format:

chmod .htpasswd files 640
chmod .htaccess files 644
chmod php files 600

very cool - i've sidetracked this thread enough. now that you mention it... i guess i didn't upload cforms to the other hosting account, that was on my OTHER hosting. :slap!:

i'm still going to say it would make sense for DA to make home the default domain (which the user can set themselves)... or at least make the navigation in the footer allow to go back to the domain you were just working with (an even better idea). something to avoid these unnecessary clicks!

I don't know if its the server or what, but the DirectAdmin panel is wicked fast in loading for me from the time of clicking a link. Cpanel regardless of who I was on (shared, VPS, or otherwise) always seems to take a sec or so to load a new page.

Err that's because it's basically only you and a few other people on the server right now. Once it gets filled up and everyones running cron jobs like mad it will slow down.

From day one the plan was to offer super cheap plans to everyone we could for the first year. Anyone that signs up during our first year, gets to keep their plan at the price they signed up for, for as long as they remain a customer. We're doing this to build a customer base and gain word of mouth referrals. After this summer all new plans will go up in price. Probably twice the price of what we offer them for now. Not impressed. They could have at least used lube. If they don't want my business fine, but don't send me invoices for products/services that were never delivered. I should have just used a proxy or VPN from one of my other servers to sign up. It's sad when you have to scam in order to not be labeled a scammer. I fuckin live here, you don't need to tell me about the fraud and scamsters here. The point is: Put the damn geo on your homepage or somewhere BEFORE the shopping cart. Don't make me give my personal info and one of my domains, then bill me two times, only to call me a fraud and block my account. Or, better yet, use the algorithms as tools and have an actual human review and process invoices and new domains like most good hosting companies do. There wasn't even an email verification done, nor was there a whois ran before immediately labeling my app fraudulent. I have signed up and have been approved for many hosts/networks/registrars etc.. from this IP. Most reputable businesses understand that people travel and even work in other countries. I have been dealing with hosting companies for over 9 years now. I shouldn't have to read some BS "getting started guide" to open a simple shared hosting account. I completely understand using the geo, I use one myself on a few of my sites but if you are going to have a script auto-block people then don't bill them. I over-reacted and it was wrong to post here without first giving zensix more of a chance to either cancel the billing or deliver the services. It looks like the billing has now been canceled. I got really pissed off when I had checked my mailbox to find two invoices for services that were not going to be delivered. I wrongly assumed you were going to keeping billing and actually expect payment. I should not have got so angry, but I did. Some days my fuse is shorter than others. Sorry for directing it at you. If there is no scam involved, this is a good offer and its nice of you to share it on WF. On a side note, I did only sign up two times, and only receive two invoices, but I understand that using the "back" button on sign-up pages/scripts can sometimes have unexpected results like this.
