Interesting report...
By 2012 about 17 billion devices will connect to the Internet, estimates Research firm IDC Corp. Frost & Sullivan's principal analyst for carrier infrastructure Sam Masud agrees. "2012, that's when we estimate the world will be out of IPv4 addresses," he said. "Between 15 and 20 years isn't exaggerating." This is ip addresses not domain names. And its been a know problem for like a decade now, as scottdaman said, hence ipv6. The problem is people don't NEED to switch yet thanks to NAT and most are trying to avoid it. Plus you have organisations like MIT which have way way way too many addresses assigned to them which could be reassigned first. China is making a big push for IPv6 though so hopefully that will help move things forward. IPv6 allows for 340,282,366,920,938,463,463,374,607,431,768,211,45 6 addresses so we won't run out of those anytime soon. |
