I'm in CA, want a single box of contact lenses. Apparently the Nazi State Government won't let me buy them without a perscription. I know the numbers, I'm an adult, WTF. How can I get some? Another state is 6 hours away, shipping online is ridiculous. What can I do?

Look for a walmart supercenter nearby- they usually have optometrists there. Get their number and schedule a 'contact eye exam' approx. $75-$150. Usually give you a free pair and tell you to come back in a few days to check the fitting. Once you get that done, they will sell them to you on the spot.
Prescriptions are good for 1 year. |

Go to lenscrafters or D.O.C. at the mall and get a prescription. Usually about 80 bucks. It's the biggest fucking waste of money ever, especially since my prescription hasn't changed in over 10 years. I have to do it every year, after I forget that my prescription's lapsed and I can't get any new contacts.
I like to refer to it as the "eye tax". One thing you can do, and I've done it before, is scam a "trial pair" of contacts from the eye doctor. I've been in a situation where I had to go to work (as a bartender... BAD idea if you can't see anything), but had no contacts... I pressured the eye doctor into giving me a trial pair that was very close to my presription and a different brand than i usually get even though they didn't have any of my prescription contacts available. Saved my ass. |

Word of advice, don't get cheap contact lenses. You should get Acuvue oasys. I sleep with them for 2 weeks and have no problems at all. A box last me about a month 1/2 to 2 months. They are great contact lenses

It sucks but you have to get a prescription and I think my year of supply cost about $200. I usually make the supply last more then a year though. 3 more years until laser eye surgery!

WTF. How are you guys sleeping in them. If I fall asleep with mine on and wake up, I feel like I have glass in my eyes. They become too uncomfortable. I just take them off every night before going to sleep and put them on in the mornings. I believe that is what optometrist recommend also.
Each pair lasts me about 4-6 weeks.

I'm gonna try some of those this week. I stopped using them several years ago back when the latest was acuvue2. It was around the time I started spending 12 hrs a day staring at a screen. After 10 hrs they would start to dry out and eyedrops would not help. The only thing I could do is soak them overnight.

I've been taking them out every night for about a year now. It's a real pain in the ass, but I'm basically blind without them.
Isn't sleeping with them one of the worst things you can do? I mean, I take short naps with them but never sleep in them for long periods of time. Your eyes need to breathe. If you keep them in 24/7 you are starving your eyes of oxygen. At least that's what my doc tells me. Could lead to a lot of problems long term. I'd like to get Lasik surgery but I'm too much of a pussy. I'm sure most can relate... lol

I just never remember to take them out. I think I've had mine in for three or four days. No problems, no dry eyes, etc. I've been doing it for years. Certain things you can't go cheap on -- and contact lenses are definitely one of those things. Some people, apparently, can't sleep with them in because of the "shape" of their eye which doesn't allow proper air flow, with contacts in, so you get red irritated eyes if you have them in awhile. I've had mine in for weeks at a time and never had a problem. And I know people who have done the same for years and years.

Unfortunatly you are required to have a prescription to get contacts, and your script is only good for a year. Sucks throwing away $100 on a eye exam that may or may not be needed. Even ordering online I still needed the script it seems.
I dont know how you guys sleep with them in, when I wake up they are always all fucked up. |

Anyone have fitted contacts? My optometrist has been trying to push them on me for the last two years. I'm not sure how much better they would be. They come with a $35 fitting fee and I'd imagine a higher price per lens than the one's I've been using for 8-10 years.
For two boxes (6 mo supply) of what I have now I only pay $73, which is a little higher than buying them online. If I ever rip one or something like that I can go get a replacement no questions asked. |

If you're going to wear your contacts to sleep in please do your eyes a favour and get ones designed for that! It can really do nasty things to your eyes.
I don't bother wearing them any more after they resulted in an eye infection that was a bitch to clear up. A family member also nearly lost his sight in one eye after something got lodged in it behind a contact. He didn't even notice it at first and had to have it surgically removed. Fortunately he recovered ok but that was pretty scary. |

Back when I was in H.S. I would leave them in for weeks; eventually the disposables will begin to disintegrate while at the same time accumulate protein deposits. I suppose it happens to some sooner than others, but they can adhere to your corneas.
Removing them is a painful process (like removing your tongue from a frozen flagpole), resulting in moderate to severe scarring on the cornea. Luckily, the vascularity in the eyes is such that it can heal quickly, but it will hurt to keep your eyes open for a couple days and it will feel like you have cotton balls stuffed in your eyelids. |

Used to wear Acuvue2 for a couple years and thought that was as good as it got. Tried BioFinity from CooperVision a few months ago and they are in a whole new league of all-day comfort. They are a thicker lens but breathe much better and retain moisture longer than any other lens I have tried.
Ask you optometrist for a sample pack even if you already like your current lenses - these things are awesome. |

Matt - What's your prescription? I'm gonna be seeing you this weekend and can ask all my friends if they have a pair that's close to your number... if worst comes to worst.
And yes, the nazi government thing is ridiculous. I got lasik in 06 but always got away with using 1800contacts.com before that. |

If you really value your eyesight and comfort, there is a new lens out called Acuvue TruEye, dailies. You throw them away at the end of the day. Very expensive, about $65/month. But so worth it. So comfortable and for the best health for your eyes, daily throw-aways are the way to go. Eye sight is not something I am going to skimp on.

Quoting this because it deserves to be said again.
Don't fuck around when it comes to your eyes. I can't recommend my current brand - they're rather uncomfortable - but I would recommend going with breathability over moisture.

I just had to get new contacts as my glasses broke...what a pain in the ass.
I was using Focus Dailies and never had any problems. Went to get my eyes checked and the doc switched me to Acuvue Trueye. They would not give me samples to cover me until my glasses were done unless I ordered a box...$90 for the 90 pack? I continued to go there arguing that I want the Focus Dailies as i did not like the Acuvue lenses. (No one will give you contact lenses in MI unless you have the prescription for that exact brand.) After several calls they finally changed the prescription to what i wanted. The end result...better contacts and I only paid $35 for the 90 pack at costco. Best part is that Costco has those in stock so i didn't have to order online or wait days to get them. |
