Ok so I am opening a coffee shop in Vancouver in a few weeks and am going to be doing the hiring soon. So I though a poll of what type of barista would the WF crowd like. So I though I would ask.

1. Just Females
2. Hot Blonds
3. Hot Asians
4. Hot Brunettes
5. Hot Gingers ( do they exists )
6.. Random Douches ( Guys )


I was thinking of mixing it up with just hot chicks, and maybe one or 2 with some sort of cool accent.

Depends on who you want your clientele to be? Who do you consider your customer base? What demographics are you going for? Where is your location? What is the inside vibe of the place going to be?

From being at Starbucks the last several times, 75% of their customers, from what I saw are women. So, you might want to hire a couple of 'qualified' attractive guys.

Remember though, with hiring a bunch of women, a lot of times a lot of 'drama' will follow. Have I said 'a LOT' yet?

Do yourself a favor and look for attractive personalities, instead of looks. Find funny, customer service focused, intelligent folks that like to think for themselves and treat every one of your customers like they were their elderly grandmother.

You find those and you'll succeed quite easily (keeping in mind you P/L is under control).

If you don't care about how successful you are - hire the one with the best looking face and biggest tits. Hair can be dyed!

Guy, just hire people who are good at their job. if they good at barista'ing, they will create a great rapport with customers, who by the way could be, black, white, asian, gay, lesbian, transgender etc etc, and that will lead to better sales. When you fully established you can muck around with stuff like hiring specific types to see if sales increase.

Yeah Personalities is where it is at. I noticed that what I am up competition against ( starbucks and Blends ) Have been hiring cheap labour and that is it.

From speaking to the people in the area that they liked it when there are hot ladies behind the bar. I mean who does not like a hot lady Men, women, gays, lesbo's all enjoy looking at a hot women. Only gays and Women like looking at guys.

Very true. However, realize that gays and women are exactly the type of customer that opts for the 4$+ latte with caramel as opposed to guys, who usually just get a medium paradiso and call it a day.

I used to work in a coffee shop long ago (i'm in North York, similar demographics to Van city). The girl I worked with was super hot, she'd get epic tips from random men, but the tips did not go to the cafe's profits so it didn't matter.

Get a mix of both, just don't hire any assholes. I would hire white guys + asian girls. White guys are best at calming down irate immigrants, and asian girls make sure that no one steals from your register.

Make sure your people are confident, friendly and extroverted. If you want to rack up massive profits, tell your employees to be brave about recommending all the other stuff, like gift/loyalty cards, croissants and good old cake on the side.

Good luck, it's going to be tough but rewarding!

Nice, how did you like working in one? I am going to do a little bit of that at the start. My place is located on Denman near Robson and in an area which fits the 4$ - 5$ latte's.

On hiring the Asians I never though of that aspect which I will agree with you on that one.

The place is surrounded by Asian restaurants, Korean, Japenese, Pho, Sushi, Chinese Diner, Thai noodle, Which I will say the desert of choice for asian is Gelato which I also happen to be making in the store.

Just sucks already over my budget by 20k and will prob go over another 30k in the next 2 weeks. Need to get it up and running and see that cash flow.

Well I've had quite a few jobs before becoming self employed with IM, ranging from web startup to recruitment to sales. Coffee shop was my favorite - it was minimum wage, but I met quite a lot of girls while working there. Scratch that, I met a TON of chicks. In fact, after my 4 month stint at the coffee shop, I realized my "game" had probably improved 100-fold as I must have practiced 1000+ ice-breakers.

The most popular choices for desserts were muffins, biscotti, cakes. Italian soda was very popular among Koreans, and it's probably the biggest cash cow (I could be wrong, but its literally 5 seconds of prep of syrup + carbonated water).

$4.50 latte will cost me 50 cents add another 20 cents for the cup/lid/sugar

The mark up for Gelato is also massive, 80% of the cost is profit from looking at my numbers so far.

You should have made it so people can only select one option. My option was really any hot female, but I felt like I should just choose one so I chose hot asians. Oh yes, a hot asian serving me coffee in the morning would make the start of my day a good day, every morning.

If you are going to go for the breakfast crowd, consider serving Crepes.

Cost is about $.20 (if that) but you can sell them for around $4-$5. They take about 30 secs in prep and people love the taste and 'old-world' idea. Am NOT familiar with Vancouver but with the French influence around there people should already be educated what they are etc..

Number one thing though: Figure out WHO you want your customers to be. Then plan/hire accordingly. Don't be all things to all people. That's when your shop will blow.

With a coffee shop (keep in mind I don't know your demographics of the area you are in) hit every competitor in a 2 mile radius. What do they do? What works? What doesn't? Talk to the barrista's... ask them what's popular.. when you find folks with an awesome personality... hey, I'm starting a new shop.. any advice you can give? ASK THEM! You'll be surprised how frank most folks will be with you.

If you love them and their personality tell them flat out, I love your personality/etc. would love to hire you! They are already working locally and KNOW the business. Pay them a couple $$ more but they probably have a following as well, that will then come to your store. (especially the chicks)

What kind of store front do you have? How big is it?

Have you thought about putting up white boards so folks can have 'idea sessions'?

How about a theme certain days of the week? Thursday evening is 'small business networking' night at which time we will have a socializer and a workshop afterwards. Tonights theme is - how to market your business locally on google! (then skim the local seo thread on this forum, write down 3 points and teach it in a 3 week course) lol
Tuesday nights is MBA student night were they can network and help each other with course work.

Long story short, become the place where you don't just buy 'coffee' but the place where 'IT' happens!

I used to own a Gelato Cafe so wish you the best of luck with the new venture. As to hiring you want to stick with brunettes that are 5'2 to 5'7" and weigh no more than 136 pounds, with preferably a large B cup or a small C cup (stray from this and you will have problems) and glasses or contacts are a plus but not necessary for a good barista.

Now you want to narrow that down some more to get the best candidates. On your application you need to add some math questions to it. Ask 3 or 4 story problems and 2 straight math questions. Mark that section to be completed at the interview. When they get to your interview have them go complete the test with no calculator (or cellphone) and also make sure you time it. Anyone that cant complete it or takes way to long is to stupid to work for you so you can send them down the road.

Not necessarily here's the problems with your choices
1 The flirt can be great but she can loose a lot of productivity by having guys just hanging around her keeping her from doing her work. These guys will hang around for 1/2 hour or longer, this is death to her productivity.

2. The serious chick will be your brunette so she's fine, if you can find one that's a bit of a flirt great but not a full blown flirt

3 The slut. You can forget productivity here she is going to have all her boyfriends stopping by all the time, and when they are not there she will be texting them. You might think that having all these guys there would be great but think again they don't buy shit and when your not looking she will give your shit away. The slut will also be late for work all the time. All the other staff will hate her and cause bickering and in fitting. And if you don't fire her one day shes just not going to show up.

4. The MILF go ahead and hire her you cant really go wrong.

I have have hired dozens of women over the years and have found the brunette is your best choice for an all around good worker. They can be fun, sexy, flirty, and most of all reliable

Make sure you hire a gay black guy (and make sure he's in a relationship so he won't hit on customers or employees), and just one. He won't work much and he'll pilfer supplies. But girls love them, and now you can hire all the hot girls you want because you've got a "diverse" set of employees.

if your focus is more on driving in customers than making good coffee why not hire people that have a ton of friends? The successful coffee stands and shops in my area always have a few dozen kids hanging out and drinking coffee all day and night cus their friends work there.

Hire a senior citizen. You may not find any old ladies needing work because See's Candies employees them all but I'm sure there are plenty of old men looking for work who just want to feel useful.

They might be a little slow but your customers will appreciate the good service and the kindness as opposed to the teenager who can't wait to get off her shift so she can go to that party.

Throw a couple of hotties into the mix and now you can hit most of the demographic.

I used to run/manage a coffee shop for years and would recommend both girls and guys; people that tell you that skilled staff is all that matters are wrong. We used to have a perfect 10 waitress, who was seriously careless and sloppy and all men loved her and were asking for her months after she quit. On the other hand, if you have hot girls serving couples, you are asking for trouble - women don't take super hot chicks near their boyfriends/husbands too lightly..
