I just got myself a 2007 GT500. I'm not really into drag, race, drift, or whatever shit. This was an impulse buy at a dealership located two blocks from where I live.
Time from seeing the listing on the web to driving out of the lot with the new tags: 1.5 hours. Funny thing is what took the most time was getting my bank's security department to increase the debit card daily limit to cover the purchase. The rest was just a few minutes here and there. To all you fucks born here, you have no idea what it's like to have to wait a week to get the tags, registration, and other documentation ready, as the case is in some countries. On days like this, I really love this country (and FL government's attitude to everything especially) Having said that, does anyone know of a good place to safely fuck around with my toy? I don't want to push it on the public roads. And the only two tracks I found near Orlando area have some weird, tight-ass schedule listings for drag runs. I'm not really interested in going head to head with anyone, and I don't really care about tuning the car to push more than the stock provides. (Besides, it's a convertible, so it's my understanding that it's not as fast as a coupe.) I'm just looking for a stretch of (private) road I could use to play around without traffic and cops. Any help?

Thanks guys. But for some reason those places (and other places I found) look like a giant queue for cars. You get a ticket, get in the line, drive, then back to the beginning of the line.
I'm looking for something more "relaxed" I guess. Some place where I don't feel like there is a bunch of people looking and me and I have to get out of the way for the next car as soon as possible. Ideally, I'm looking for a place where I could start-stop a bunch of times, turn around, etc. Does something like that exist?

Did they include a dress?
lol, Dragstrip Finder You probably want to go on the Test & Tune night, normally like $10 and on Fridays. Saturdays will have bracket/ET races where you compete against other people with a handicap to see who can be most consistent throughout the night. The top 3 normally split the entry fees up and may get a trophy. |

convertible isn't as fast for two reasons:
1 - retractible roof engine/mechanics adds weight 2 - soft top (when up) creates more drag than a hard top. if the top is down, then drag++. That's all really. So if it was a GT500 convertible vs a GT500 coupe with equal drivers, the coupe would win, but it wouldn't be like, huge differences. Besides, I doubt your goal here was to be racing the thing, so it's not like it matters. Find a drag strip that has Grudge/Test runs on like, Friday nights (a lot do this) and you can just sign up and get in line, no pre-registration necessary. The only requirement usually is you need a helmet, regardless if your car is street legal or not.

Racing Is Life...

Um Car Racing -- yeah that's my area of expertise. Although not a drag racer nor street cars; you've come to the right place. Our great country is littered with race tracks. Sadly many of them are not what you say you're looking for: there are alot of short ovals many which are dirt. Having said that there are still lots of places for you to go. Someone said to get a helmet. This is a must. You want an SA rated helmet; Not a motorcycle helmet. SA stands for special application basically its designed to take mulitple hits such as those that occur in car wrecks. Motorcycle helmets are designed to take one hard hit then protect against sliding deteroration. Be prepared to spend near a G note for a real good one, you only have one head: its worth it. Be smart -- wherever you choose to run You make sure they have an ambulance there and on standby. Mostly this is an insurance requirement and I've never participated in any event (I've hundreds of track days and races under my belt) that didn't have one. I did a lapping day at sebring through Skip Barber years ago. I know they had open drag racing there 'cause I cruised by the nite before to scent the atmosphere. Many big oval race tracks also have standby drag facilities -- or my true love; which is road courses. Anyway here are some useful links to getting you started. But a warning: Racing is the Most Addictive Drug known to Man -- once you stick that needle into your vein you might never come back. Grassroots Motorsports Magazine An amatuer racing mag with useful info NHRA.com This is the sanctioning body for the drag racing you see on TV Home « Frank Hawley You can take your own car here and my educated guess is this would be the most relaxed place you could go. Frank's drag racing school was one of the first of its kind. Tracks Florida information from the auto racing directory Random Fl tracks Corvette Clubs - Corvette Club of America Just because you don't own a vette doesn't mean you can't join -- and get access to their track days. Most makes of car clubs let outside makes in. SCCA Sports Car Club of America Road racing sanctioning body also cover amature events. Good luck with your driving.

There is a place called the "compound" (near cogan and degroodt) in Palm Bay, FL (Brevard County). It's a big area where roads were built for a subdivision and the subdivision was never built. It's not an actual track, but you can go out there and open it up and as long as it's not 4am you should be ok. We're not supposed to, but I go out there and ride my kx250 all the time and no one ever says anything. We've even thrown bonfire parties out there.

My guess is the trick is to rev it up but go easy on the clutch, to make a soft but fast launch, while keeping the supercharger in a working range the whole time. And that's easier said than done. But overall this is really a lot of fun. If anyone is in Central Florida, come by Central Florida Racing Complex on Fridays from 6PM till the lights out. $10 to watch. $25 to drive as many times as the queue allows.

Did you get the SVT package? You can do much better, talk to some racers that are willing to teach you how to drive.

Just a suggestion...
You should consider looking into something like this: PerformanceBox and DriftBox from VBOX USA or if you have a little more green... PerformanceBox and DriftBox from VBOX USA Having some data to work off of may make it easier to get the most out of your car. It is also useful when you start with the mods... |
