I've been a St. Pierre fan since his days in the UCC (Where he got his start.) Shields looks like a contender, but I think a lot of it is just hype. Look how much Dan Hardy was hyped up...then look how he miserably failed.
Shields seems like a deserving guy, but you can't give anyone a chance against St. Pierre until you see them in the ring against him. CAN'T WAIT!

This is probably gonna be GSPs first real fight. Jake shields isn't your typical so so fighter that the UFC throws at GSP. Jake is 26-4 and he basically is the same style of fighting as GSP they both are wrestlers and love to take people to the ground. I was pretty disappointed with Shields last fight, but then again like I said he has the fighting style of GSP. Both guys are kinda lay and pray. I still give it to GSP, but this is probably gonna be his toughest opponent yet.

I cannot wait for this. I am taking a client and got sick seats.
55K people, thats insane!!! I was in Montreal for the last GSP fight, and the place was rocking. I can only imagine what will happen in Toronto. I agree that it will be a closer fight then people think...but GSP will win. |

Considering Jake beat Dan Henderson and Okami (he will be fighting Silva soon) in a higher weight class. Leads me to believe Jake is no chump and can beat anyone on a good day.
But and its a big But. GSP is on another level when it comes to ground. Jake will never KO anyone. GSP has great stamina, he wont have a blowout like Henderson did. Also looking at Jakes last fight with Kampman, I laugh at the thought people give him a chance against GSP.

Comparing a two-dimensional fighter to GSP is how fighters like Dan Hardy are given a chance, despite being absolutely tooled by him come fight night. Only a lightning-fast power puncher can beat Georges on his worst day (I.e. Anderson Silva.) |

I wrestled at Brock University for 3 years. I wasn't anywhere near the level of many of the UFC guys, but I can tell a superior wrestler from a guy with average skills. The link above shows a snippet from the Shields vs Kampman fight. Shields is not a superior wrestler folks. Put him up against Hughes, Koscheck...or even one of my fellow Alumns Sean Pierson (fighting on the same card as St. Pierre/Shields) and it would become quite obvious that he isn't on their level. I'm not hating on the man -- he just isn't at that caliber. Shields is a grinder like Jon Fitch, not a superior technician. |

We have to think Jake Shields has a chance, to make the fight more interesting. He has a punchers chance, but with a freak submission. Thats all I give him.
Also Really looking forward to watching Jose Aldo, cant wait for that fight. Couture vs Machita is probably going to be boring, still nice to see Lyoto back in action.

Shields is no slouch. I remember people giving Hardy a better chance than Shields.
Shields has 15 straight wins with wins over Henderson, Mayhem, Okami, Robbie Lawler, who are all strong middleweights. He also has a strong chin and recovery, great cardio and insane BJJ. His wrestling isn't at Kos' level, but he is more relentless and will try 5 rounds straight to take you to the floor, he has the cardio to do it, unlike Koscheck who think's hes a K-1 kickboxer at times and only shoots on you if he's in trouble. It is certainly possible for Shields to sub GSP, but getting the fight to the ground is another story, plus even if he gets him down GSP is a great BJJ fighter too. GSP is the best at WW. The guy is ridiculous and will probably be talked about for a long time after he's done fighting. I think Shields can win 2 times out of 10 if they fought, GSP is too complete, too strong and too smart. I think GSP's biggest hole is his stand-up, and that isn't too big of a hole anyway because he's pretty damn good at it and always getting better. Plus he doesn't have to worry about this aspect during this fight anyway, Shields is the probably first guy you'd want to have a kickboxing fight with if you were a UFC welterweight.
