I have had a couple of interesting conversations with google today - just wanted to see if anyone else has had same experience but basically I thought they were the font of all knowledge when it came to PPC.

I am just starting out in PPC, I have basically got the best 'buying kws' I could find, set an ad group for each one with two different ads per kw. I've tried to keep the KW as the title as much as possible. I have set kw to exact match as I thought that would be more focused etc.

Anyway, a week later and my account is still under review so I phoned the help desk (one on one support for first 6 weeks apparently) and this guy takes one look at my account and says kw shoudl be broad match (do you agree?), and that you should never have ad group per kw (i thought this would make tracking easier)

He then started going on about my website only having one page (direct url to one page on the ad) and he was totally baffled as to what I wanted the customer to do when they got to my site so I kept saying I wanted them to visit the site, click on the affiliate link and buy the product but he really wasn't getting it.

I then asked would I be better linking direct to affiliate link as I am just testing PPC - he had to ask a colleague as he didn't think you could link to a third party website. ????

To cut a long story short, he then asked why I would want to link to a third party website when there was no gain to me and asked me what an affiliate link was?

He then said he had never come across an affiliate account but offered to restructure campaign for me and to top it all off phoned back a couple of hours later to say he couldnt help me restructure campaign as my website only has one page (my site has loads of pages) so I then had to explain to him that the url was direct to one page so he asked how to see the rest of the site (???) Does this guy even know what a url is?

So is it just me being stupid or have other people had experience of google staff being a bit clueless?

Exactly as the above person mentioned, Google isn't too fond of affiliates as they perceive them as being spammy, unethical, one page websites which are merely used as a gateway or middle man between the customer and the vendor.

Therefore, Google have strict Adwords policies for affiliates trying to make money through their platform one of these policies is that the landing page must conform to their rules and regulations, this means you need to have other internal pages linked from the landing page.

Just think, Google is after high quality websites for it's users to browse, not one page landing pages...so make a complete website with interlinkable web pages, lots of useful content and such and re-structure it to help focus the users attention towards the point of conversion that you are looking for.

There are lots of regulations for Google Adwords and personally I feel it is much better to stay on the other side of what they want, and that's product owners advertising their own products and services through Google Adwords and not affiliates unfortunately.

Google hires monkeys.. !!

Anyways, if you link to your affiliate link, you will get your Adwords account banned instantly.

I could be damn sure that you spoke with one of the guys sitting in the Hyderabad office.

Can you pass me the name of the guy you called. Let me have some fun with him :)

During the period of getting approved, Should we keep the site clean of affiliate links and once the approval process is done with the morons, push the links take the ads online ?

Cheers for the info guys - I didn't realise you weren't supposed to direct link. I have heard of loads who do, will give it a miss for now anyway.

Makes sense what you say about google and affiliates - mad when affiliates push so much money their way.

Why pay google for traffic when they send so much of it for free?

very true!

You'd be surprised. A lot of money (even several $M) to you is peanuts to Google. Unless you're one spending 8 figures a year with them, you're small fry and quite possibly in their way.

The top 10 corporates spend over $2.5M each per month (and up to $10M) with Google, so if they say "we don't want scummy affiliates in the listings", they're gone.

Plus Google is trying to become the major affiliate in major channels like flights - independant affs don't figure in their business plan.

Yup yup. Everyone should definitely go by this statement. Stop paying money for traffic. Free is the way to go. Who even values their time anyways?

Of course google wants you to use broad kw's, makes google more money off non-converting keywords causing you to spend 3x-5x more than you should. One you should have asked for advice before thinking you could handle adwords blind. Second, listen to what people say, research it, and then ask more questions until you get it. Then build your campaign.

Google hates affiliates, so what.. adwords will always be filled with affiliate links in some form or fashion..

let me tell you my story with google Indian guys. They used to call me every week from past 8-10 weeks about the funds in my accounts and they don't know what the fuck is affiliate marketing.

They says it is not allowed to promote someone else products. Don't allowed to promote diet products. wtf?

Assholes taken control over my account and pressurized me to run campaigns.. I said I will do once I have all the page setup and shit but again they edited my campagins and I paused.

just a week ago motherfuckers banned my account saying the website truthabtabs is violating their usage policy. I have never run that campaign just an ad paused and fuckers banned it.. few mails back and forth and they are not replying anymore.

Looted my $300. Fuck Google.

I'm amazed you got to talk to a breathing person. Even if they were brainless.
