Supreme Court Orders California to Release 30,000+ Prisoners; Scalia Freaks Out: SFist

The 5-4 majority opinion in the case of Brown v. We would have to make extreme cuts to get down to capacity.. but it becomes pretty much impossible once you consider the amount of illegal mexicans we are putting away every year.

Someone needs to dig up some stats. I can't recall the exact figure but illegals make up a large percentage of california prisoners.

Prison used to be lucrative business 10 may be 15 years ago but after the budget, prisons become more over crowded and they just have to let prisoners go because the state can't afford it anymore.

So Luke...what are your thoughts on why state officials can't erect new "security companies" and then pass a law declaring overflows of prisoners be put in their own prisons...or some such thing?

Seems like such an easy way for our state gov to make some additional coin on the side while ensuring the safety of its citizens at the same time.

Is it as simple as not being able to raise taxes anymore to pay for more prisons?

I'd have to hear more details to say for sure, but this sounds a bit problematic too... Actually everything is too problematic until they make fewer things illegal.

Except that the government has never been known to actually make a profit and run things without some kind of ultra-bureaucracy popping up. Heck, the prisons WERE run like that until Reagan came along with his war on drugs and started giving all the power and money to the private corporations to do our job for us. As far as I know the following is true:

1. Felons can be State or Federal.

2. You can go to jail for a misdemeanor.

3. Some Felons can vote.

It is possible that I am wrong. But I believe I am right.

States have felonies as well. Some things are classified differently and not shared.

There are a lot of problems with the system. The article linked above focuses on one of them.
