Most libertarians oppose the Patriot Act. Rand Paul, a staunch libertarian, is doing some fancy footwork to stall its renewal. Here's a brief summary:

A troubling note from the piece linked above:

The provisions at issue enable law enforcement officials to conduct surveillance on terrorist suspects, including those who switch communication devices such as using disposable cellular phones and those who are so-called lone wolves — individuals who aren’t linked to known terrorist organizations abroad. A third provision enables law enforcement officials access to suspects’ business transactions, including car rentals, hotel bills and other credit card transactions.

Some of you may remember Big Sis (Janet Napolitano) calling out lone wolves in her Homeland Security report a couple years ago. And here we are today going after citizens who aren't linked to known terrorist organizations.

Shameful.

Harry Reid, always an ass, has painted Paul as being friendly to terrorists. Reid uses different words, but that's how positioning works in the Beltway. Here's Paul's response:

I've noticed little attention for this from the mainstream media and talking heads, probably because it doesn't fit into the left vs. right paradigm.

Here were the senators brave enough to vote no :

Rand Paul (R-Ky.)
Max Baucus (D-Mont.)
Mark Begich (D-Alaska)
Dean Heller (R-Nev.)
Jeff Merkley (D-Ore.)
Lisa Murkowski (R-Alaska)
Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.)
Jon Tester (D-Mont.)

Just a couple weeks ago Paul was debating health care with Sanders, an admitted socialist. Now they are together on this. That's the type of thing we should see more often instead of the usual partisan politics.

I suspect "Vanessa" is referring to Paul's position about the Civil Rights act of '64. Essentially, business owners should be allowed to discriminate. And of course, he's correct. "Vanessa" likely has little understanding of economics or property rights.

Robert Murphy covers this very issue beautifully in Chapter four of his Politically Incorrect Guide to Capitalism (written in '07). And Walter Block rightly defends Paul's position here. An excerpt:

I'm pretty sure you guys are giving Vanessa a little more credit than she deserves, because I would bet money she's never even heard of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, let alone knows Rand Paul's position on it (that's why she bounced, rather than bring it up). What's more likely is that she heard somebody call the Tea Party racist, so he must be racist. You guys think I'm exaggerating, but you'd be surprised how ignorant most people really are and once they make their minds up - that's just the way it is.
