Exercise is pretty much essential for maintaining weight loss. For example, the National Weight Control Registry, which tracks over 5,000 individuals who have lost significant amounts of weight and kept it off for long periods of time, found that "94% increased their physical activity." What I disagree with is all the misinformation that frames exercise as an absolute requirement for initial weight loss. |

I wouldn't call those remarkable results, and I've seen lots of contradictory scientific "evidence" to the system, but I also didn't follow the book to all it's extremes so I don't doubt someone could drop 20 pounds in 30 days or whatever he's promising if they were willing to truly body hack themselves that massively. Shooting for sub 190 now..

Most importantly you want to eat nutrition rich foods. Those that till contain minerals, vitamins and electrolytes in order to really nurture you and thus provide the best level of health.
Think raw food and organic and cut down frozen stuff and any sort of artificially made powders. Best of success! |

Calorie counting is stupid and pointless. If you overshoot by 20 calories for for 20 years you'll end up 40 pounds heavier. Nobody can maintain that precise caloric balance. Eat one bite more of food and you're over. Walk 100 steps less and you're over. I don't remember who it was on this forum that pointed me to this guy (see video below) but I can't thank him enough. Changed my life. Enough with the 6-7 meals/day, whole grain only BS. There's never a shortage of nutritional advice. Everyone's a fucking expert! And yet the world is fucking fatter and more diseased than ever. Guess what? Our ancestors didn't eat 6-7 meals/day nor did they consume grains until 10,000 years ago. They ate "artery-clogging" animal fat and fasted when they had nothing to eat. Coincidentally, they had NONE of the diseases that plague modern man today. Enlighten yourselves...

My scenario: 6'1" - 201 lbs. - was trying to get down to 180 since beginning of May. I ate between 1,800 - 2,200 cals/day; high carb, moderate protein, low fat (i.e. the American Heart Association recommended diet). Exercise: 3 days a week resistance training; 3 days a week HIIT (running on the treadmill). Also, I live in the center of Boston and walk everywhere to the tune of 4-6 miles/day. Weight loss up until July 11th. ZERO. Yes, fucking 0 after 2.5 months. Oh, and by the way, with that amount of activity and eating habits, I should be the poster child of the AHA. But low and behold, my blood test last month showed I'm hypercholesterolemic (fantastic). One month ago, I was introduced to Gary Tabues and the real reasons we gain weight. I cut out carbs: no sugars, grains, potatoes, or rice. I eat like a PIG - all the foods that are supposed to be unhealthy (steak, bacon, eggs, etc...) I'm never hungry, and I'm down 7 lbs. since July 11th. Weight loss is not rocket science but it's not about calories in vs. calories out either. A calorie is not just a calorie because of the different hormonal responses it elicits (i.e. carbs spike insulin which leads to fat storage; you can't lose weight if you have high levels of insulin). Again, watch the video.

I don't know why I thought you where saying something different, I agree with you 100%. I personally eat a pretty high protein diet, although I do keep some carbs around, wheat pasta or bread. Although I'm not just in it for weight loss, over the last few months I haven't lost a ton a weight, but I have put on muscle and dropped body fat, so it's a win. I lift and do cardio 4-5 times a week. Depends what you're going after, but should be effective either way. |

I've been eating healthy and exercising for 5 weeks now and lost 20lb.
I stick to about 1800 calories a day, exercise at least 3 times a week and always have breakfast. and NEVER eat after 8pm, seriously. I feel so much healthier. The only think i will say, no one will ever lose weight if they're not in "the zone" it should be the only thing you think about constantly (except IM of course). Once in the frame of mind, it's so easy. |

^^^ Spinach and washed spinach leaves?
I did P90X earlier this year after starting a thread on it here. I lost 21lbs. I am starting Round 2 in about 10 minutes. Best decision I ever made. Went from 212 to 191lbs and lost around 12 inches on my body. |

What you are doing is simply a ketogenic diet and will not be any more effective than if you swapped out carbs for fat and ate the same amount of calories.

Next, a calorie is not a calorie... it all depends on your sensitivity to insulin. Feed a diabetic person 1,200 calories of twinkies and they will not lose weight. As above, it all depends on your metabolism. If you feed an insulin resistant (i.e. type 2 diabetic) 2,000 calories of donuts they will not lose the same amount of weight (most likely none at all) than if they ate 2,000 calories of chicken / vegetables.

Bringing this thread back to life // Rundown of what happened and what is happening now.
I'm terrible with dates so I'll probably be off on a few of these but you get the idea. 3-4 months ago I was on track with my diet for a total of 5.5 weeks, I went from 253lbs to 232lbs // I was losing an average of 1-2lbs for the first few weeks of eating pretty healthy with zero sugar, then I cut carbs as much as possible and my body really responded to that, More energy and faster weight loss, saw two weeks in a row at 6lbs down each // my best weeks. TL;DR // Sister and her son moved into my house and stressed me the fuck out (TL;DR STORY: So a crisis happened, My sister got into a huge fight with her husband and they split // she showed up at my door with her 5yo son and needed a place to stay, I tried to stick to my diet but it slowly got worse and worse with the added stress of living with a depressed sister and a 5yo being well... a 5yo. Sleep? yea right, kid was up at 7AM loud as fuck and in bed at 10PM and then we had to be quiet and I work mostly at night so I was getting very little sleep to boot.) So after being a complete bitch over the holidays and my sister off on her own again I'm ready to get back on track, I'm currently 239lbs and as of tonight cutting all sweets, as many carbs as possible and increasing lean protein with little fats. Looking for a way to get cardio ( I live in FL running outside is humid as fuck #firstworldproblem ) so I'm looking to get a treadmill as I'll be more likely to do that often if its easy #anotherfirstworldproblem Looking to do cardio for 3-4 weeks until I'm not embarrassingly out of shape then going to the local gym to start weight training and do cardio every other day. I'm giving myself 8 months to get to ~160lbs (depending on how my body reacts, might not get that low if I can put decent muscle on) and start adding muscle weight until I get decent looking. (Not a fan of the overly buff look, but no one hates 15lbs of muscle)

I'm a fatty. I started my journey in November 2011 at 290.2 pounds. Down to 247.6 now but I've hit a bit of a plateau and haven't lost anything in 2 weeks.
About to start a juice fast to cleanse. Was thinking of a 30 day nothing-but-green-juice diet. Just waiting on my juicer. From there, I plan to reintroduce food, and supplement with high nutrient juicing. |

We do shit like century rides, half mile swims, 5 mile running races some mornings, wind surfing, mudruns, and we're going to be one of the many teams doing the Spartan race later this year (having just done the Warrior Dash). FWIW: I'm 5'11", 175lbs. Ecto/Mesomorphic all day, everyday so I doubt I'll ever look like a Spartan who'll eat a Persian for breakfast. More like GSP, but not as famous or rich as GSP. lol |

All I said is that attempting to control your calories on a conscious level isn't the best approach because you can never know how much you actually expend. Furthermore, you stopped at my first paragraph because *I* never read what you said? Don't you see the irony in that? In any case, I don't really give a shit. If you or anyone else wants to count calories and spend the rest of their lives weighing food, all the power to you. As for me, I'll never again have a weight problem in my life because I follow a simple principle: I let my hunger decide how many calories I should consume. What a concept, eh? The human body is the most complex organism in existence. We have multiple redundant systems to ensure survival (e.g. increase in heart rate when exercising, thirst response when dehydrated, etc., etc..) - yet somehow people believe that eating (i.e. the most critical activity needed for survival) should be an intellectual process, not an instinctual one. Take a moment to digest that last sentence...
