Question Backpacking Thailand/Vietnam

Around Sept/Oct I am planing a solo two week trip and ive decided on Thailand and Vietnam. It seems half you mofos live or have gone there before so does anyone have recommendations on what to do or where to go? I will be sepending a week in each country. I have plans for a ha long bay boat tour and all the Buddhist temples I can find.

Hanoi is the biggest shithole on this planet check out Halong bay en GTFO, seriously I would probably go postal if I had to stay more then one night in that city. traffic is god damn insane, I flew in there for about 4 weeks ago it took me 5 hours in town before I headed back to the hotel and bought myself a ticket to Ho Chi Minh the day after.

english in vietnam is super poor, let me know if you're planning to drop by bangkok and we can take you out on LB free night in town me and few others are living here longterm.

If you like elephants, I advice you to visit the Elephant Nature Park in Chiang Mai. It will be a bit expensive (around $100 I think), but it's amazing place and it will change how you think about elephants, especially elephants in Thailand. Takes a full day.

Also in Chiang Mai, try taking a cooking class. There are several cooking classes available. I never cooked before in my life and had a lot of fun. Classes of half a day or a day are available. Thai food is amazing. Hmmmm, Pad Thai

LMAO! Isn't it customary to say it very loudly too?

Be sure to say thankyou to all the police/military you see; it's considered a sign of respect.

Well I'm not millionaire yet and I was invited to stay with friends. Life is quite easy here with a tiny amount if money.

Ibhappen to share a condo with a friend but we also have 2 friends living in the building next door who has one bedroom condos that are completely new shits still wrapped in plastic with furniture. That cost you about 1 k the location is suck for shopping. Then ad another 1k per month for living that includes electricity, internet, water, cleaner, laundry getting done and some fun.

That shit would cost me somewhere around 6 k in London that would be mg other option, and ivhavent no idea of Tokyo which is my nedlxg stop.

So simple math, I make enough to live like thi why not move and help my self for a year or so whenbim building up my company.

I`d say $4000 US per month bare minimum. That`s if you have a pretty small and simple apartment in a reasonably central area. $5000-$6000 would get you a better lifestyle.

Osaka is cheaper. It`s pretty easy to live on $3500 a month here. Everything`s a little less ritzy but correspondingly cheaper.

Well it all depends on what you are into in life, sweaty fat and disgusting euro trash, dark skinnned Thai chicks from E-San or white hot Asian model looking chicks

I choose option number three that means I need to stay far away from option 1-2, and only hang out where the hot chicks are.

Come over to bangkok and I'll show you...

Agreed, and for an example:

I had a nice hotel booked in the old quarter in Hanoi for 4 days pre-paid. I lasted 36 hours, and fucked off to Thailand. Got into Hanoi hotel around 6pm, and by 4pm the next day I was at the airline office asking when the next flight out was.

Where are you pulling the models from these days? When I used to live in Bangkok some of the well known clubs like Q bar were good but they turned to trash and started filling up with western women and hookers.

Two weeks is probably not really enough time to do either country justice, let alone both. If I was you I'd give Vietnam a skip, Ha Long Bay was one of the most disappointing experiences of my life.

It would be one of the most beautiful places on the planet, but the Vietnam people (and travellers) treat it like a dumping ground. When I was there there were plastic bags all over the joint and it looked like absolute shit - I was there just after the rainy season so I am sure that had something to do with it but still. It's also a fairly long bus ride so you will want to spend at least a night there. If you do that, that's two days already gone out of your 7 day stay.

When I went we stayed in the french quarter of hanoi and it was OK, lots of interesting museums and whatnot from the war. But at the end of the day it was just like any other SE asian big city.

Spend time in Ho Chi Minh, seems like a much more relaxed place. Visit the tunnels (try to go to ones that haven't been expanded for fat westerns so you can get a true idea of how small they are).

You probably won't have time but Hoi Ann was amazing, got 2 suits about 15 shirts and 2 jackets tailored and it set me back about $400-$500 USD. It was also a pretty good place to just relax with a few nice bike rides in an around the city.

In terms of Thailand - it really depends what you want. If you just want to fuck other westerners and get drunk then just go koh sa mui and make sure you trip coincides with a full moon party. If you just want prostitues then go to pattaya. Bangkok is a bit of a shithole so I would try and get out of there ASAP, although there are some nice markets on a sunday.

I really liked Koh Tao island, I also spent a bit of time in Koh Samet - lots of young asian chicks go there on the weekends when they study in Bangkok. Although lots of prostitutes there as well.

Honestly just pick one or the other or go for three weeks. You will spend fuck all money, especially if you are in the least bit frugal. I spent about $2k in a month there and I was living like a fat cat.

Ive stayed at Tiger Muay Thai - perfect place to go to get fit and improve SERPS!

Yeah stay out of soi 11 for talent, I mean you will def find chicks there that are into white guys Bed supper club is the same crowd.

We go out up in thong loif we are looking to pull local nice talent, so might goto DEMO or funnky villa. We also knows some okey Hi So locals that are running tight with some people from tv (Aum Patcharapa) so there are never any shortages of hot chicks. Its a whole different ball game picking up there when you got Thai dude rolling up in Lamborghini''s and Limo's but is usually ends up in really descent party's.

Geez, Phuket is the most expensive place in Thailand. But it sounds like maybe you've beat it with your gig at Tiger Muay Thai - cheap to stay there?

So you're hanging with Aum, bastard.

Of course, back in the day I was hanging with May Phattarawarin. She's past her prime now but she was smokin' back then. See:

Vietnam is awesome. Some popular tourist places are Nha Trang (very beautiful beaches) and Cu chi (about 20-30 mins from Ho Chi Minh City I believe). Cu chi has a lot of museums and shit from the Vietnam war and you can even take a tour down the underground tunnels if you're into that type of stuff.

Spent 4 days in Saigon in May, awesome time, loved every minute of it. Some highlights for me:

Cu Chi Tunnels: This is a really cool thing to see, especially from an American perspective. The videos they show you are propaganda films from the government about how the Americans descended on a peaceful farming village "like a pack of crazy devils". I don't know how you would arrange it, but our tour guide was a guy named Mr. Binh, and he is a Vietnamese guy from Saigon who fought for the US side, he spent 7 years in a re-education camp after the war. He really gave some great perspective.

Look up Zoom Cafe, it's located close to the backpacker district. It's kind of expensive compared to other tours, and it sounds cheesy, but it is an awesome time. They put you on the back of a scooter with a guide, and a couple of hostesses take you around the city to different restaurants and bars and stuff. Tons of fun, owned by a guy from South Carolina.

The "Reunification Palace" is another place worth a quick visit, again for the contrast between the official government version of what happened and the American US History Class version.

We took a quick trip down the beach at Mui Ne, which was nice. It's a lot like Mexico, actually, and the seafood is damn good.

Feel free to PM if you have specific questions. I also visited Bangkok while on the same trip and have some suggestions if you need them.

Aum is definitely hot shit these days. But May was really hot in person. Lots of fun, too. Liked to party.

I live near Khao Yai National Park. Really nice up here. Weather is a lot better here than down at the beaches, cooler and dryer all year. Some great beaches in Thailand but I lived near the beach most of my life in southern California and don't feel like I need to live by a beach anymore.

I tried to embed a nice shot of May but I suck. Some good shots over here Thai babe May Phattarawarin in orange bikini

Thanks for the input guys. I know its not much time but i think its better than not going. If i can find enough stuff in thailand i may just do the two weeks there. I found a cooking school in bangkok that i plan to spend a few days at, also a meditation class/retreat offered at a temple.

I am spoken for so the girls are out, I want the trip to be girl drama free. At most a strip club or adult show. Beaches are meh, ive lived in south florida my whole life i can just go to the bahamas for beaches. It would need to be crystal clear and full of mountains to get me there.

Looking for some awesome gift shoping, great food, natrual wonders, and religious/curtural events.

In that case do Chiang Mai for one week and Bangkok + Koh Samui for the other week.

When in Koh Samui you don't have to do the beaches; there is mountain stuff to do too, ziplines, hiking, elephant trekking, waterfall swimming, etc., and one heck of a tourist strip.

Chiang Mai has the really cool temples, ruins, and parks though; I did the cooking class at Lanna Thai a bit north of it and thought it was awesome. Even for ppl who don't like to cook. Hike up Doi Inthanon (You can drive 99% of the way to the top) and see the park there. Good stuff.

I lived in Bangkok for 4 years.

I wouldn't want to visit there, honestly, as a tourist, not too much to do.

Maybe because I lived there so long. If you do Bangkok do Wat Arun, Reclining Buddha and the Grand Palace plus maybe a night in Pat Pong, Nana or Soi Cowby and then get the hell out of there.

Chiang Mai's a nice area, some nice things to do and gives you a more authentic feel.

Pattaya sucks and since you don't want girls, stay away.

If you're into history and old temples hit up Ayutthuya, not too far North of Bangkok. Also possibly check out Sukhothai and Pai up north.

Anyway, everyone's different and I have a hard time telling people what to see in Thailand, there's so many different options for tourists. I didn't see enough of the country when I was there, really. Not enough at all...

Also you may not need beaches but Phi Phi Islands and Krabi have some amazing scenery with all the limestone formations.

Two weeks isn't long. I would stick to thailand. Head up north (chaing mai) and do some trekking, cooking etc. I spent 6 months up north, loved it. More relaxed, nice people, less sleaze.

Nothing to do in Bangkok? I lived there 3 years and barely scratched the surface. It's not very accessible, sort of reminds me of Los Angeles in that way. You usually can't just stumble in off the street and find something cool, you gotta know where to go. But there is so much weird/cool/interesting/exotic crap in that chaotic place. I bet onkelmicha has an opinion on that.
