It's a cultural thing, not a lack of actual talent or skills. If you can connect with them on a cultural level and talk the talk, it's great value. The people I deal with make entire websites in flash and do complex programming for under $500 that no one in their right minds in a western country would even touch without adding a zero to the figure. The trick is to be able to connect with them and have them want to finish shit on time.

This can be achieved by simply talking the language that they do, which earns their trust, and feigning similar beliefs and outlooks unique to the particular backward culture (and there are many vastly different ones in the subcontinent). And then playing with their hopes by telling them that they have a chance of making it "big time" Capitalism and social manipulation 101 really. It's not exactly altruistic but I believe there is some value in this approach, everyone including the ones doing the work can make money and that's all that matters.

I'm having the toughest time working with an Indian developer right now. He keeps on saying that he did not previously agree to the work that had to be done and keeps demanding more money. I will research the next developer a lot more, that's for sure.

I have had great employees and shitty employees from India, Paki, Fili, Bangldesh, US, and Eastern Europe. But if you are talking programming I have always had fantastic luck with Ukrainians. Communication is always excellent and they are hard working people that have fantastic educations. They typically charge more then Indians but they do the work in 1/4 of the time and I have never had one try and get more money out of me then we agreed on. That being said people are people and finding someone to work for you is a process of sifting and sorting. Being VERY clear about what you want and what you will pay, monitoring them closely, and firing them fast when you get a hint that it is not working out and move on to the next person.
Also realize that many of them have been screwed more then a street whore so they are always working expecting that you are going to put the wood to them and not pay/under pay/dispute/ etc

If I spent a year living with an Indian/Pakistani/Bengali family, I would probably have some sort of super passionate response to this thread.

This is one of the human being's many flaws. Abstract logic takes a backseat to personal experience.

I prefer people in China and Tibet, theyre usually very nice and work well. Although I currently have a person from Bangladesh whose been really great so far.

But all in all it comes down the the individual person, even if I have had horrid luck with Indians.
