Indictment Charges Megaupload Site With Piracy McLEAN, Va. — Federal prosecutors in Virginia say they have shut down one of the world’s largest Internet file-sharing sites, Megaupload.com, and charged its founder and others with violating piracy laws. An indictment accuses the company of costing copyright holders more than $500 million in lost revenue from pirated films and other content. The indictment was unsealed Thursday, one day after Web sites shut down in protest of two Congressional proposals intended to thwart the online piracy of copyrighted movies and TV programs. Megaupload.com has claimed it is diligent in responding to complaints about pirated material. The indictment says that at one point, Megaupload was the 13th most popular Web site in the world. |

Personally I didn't like Mega network, with bandwidth and storage space getting cheaper by day their viewing/downloading limits were just ridiculous, but closing down the websites instead of just making the owner to remove copyrighted content is not right.

Swizz Beats owns Megaupload. Fighting back. He and a few others in the music industry supported his website even though it had their songs, videos, etc.

I love how whenever big sites get DDoS'd it gets a bunch of attention that causes people who would have never visited those sites for any other reason to try to access them to verify that they are down, making the problem even worse.

The state's process: Step 1: Ask lawyers to check for violations committed by the mark. Step 2: If no clear violations can be found, ask lawyers whether they can stretch existing laws to encompass the mark's actions. * Step 3: Take the mark! * The answer is always "yes." Heck, you can torture people using this process. You can even assassinate U.S. citizens while avoiding the inconvenience of a trial. Indicting the owners of websites? Child's play.

So what have they actually been charged with? As others have mentioned, if they complied with DMCA notices and got taken down then wtf? I thought this shit wasn't going to happen unless PIPA/SOPA broke through

Nice retaliation. But I fear this ONLY helps congress make a step towards SOPA, even though groups like Anonymous won't be held back by censorship.

"As part of the crackdown on Megaupload, 20 search warrants were executed in nine countries, including the United States. About $50 million in assets were also seized, as well as a number of servers and 18 domain names, the authorities said."

fuck this is getting out of hand! We should have chosen an anti-SOPA keyword for our SEO Contest to help raise the awareness... instead we're pushing dog snuggies.
May the lord of the interwebz forgive us.
