"Republicans and Democrats need to come together and work as one unit for the betterment of America"....all while taking pot-shots at the Republican Congress and prior administration.

Don't get me wrong - I'm not pro-republican or democrat, as I don't have faith in any of 'em. But is nobody recognizing this double-talk?

Oh...and all these awesome programs and training he wants to institute....how are these gonna get paid for again?

If you have small children and can't afford to take them anywhere, you can show them that video and tell them they're at the circus. It's more fun to watch now that they have changed the seating arrangement- the Republicans have to look for other Republicans to decide whether or not they need to stand up and clap.

It's the one day of the year where a good portion of the list of Presidential succession is in one building, so the most stressful for Secret Service types who have to plan for the worst.

It's one of the best deliveries of a speech I've seen in a while, this guy is better with the words than Bill Clinton. But most of what he said just gets on my nerves.

You can't force schools to lower tuition and expect them to raise their standards. The schools are having to raise tuition just to meet the standards they need to be competitive. Tuition money in state schools (at least in TN) gets used up about halfway though the semester, then they are at the mercy of the state for the funding. To offset this, they constantly try to increase enrollment and have to redevelop their programs to accommodate. And in this situation, you could spend a lot of time doing creative things but the bottom line is more buildings and more teachers.

But then he talks about paying more to teachers. How you gonna force the schools to lower tuition, raise standards and pay more to teachers?

What can this new TEU do that the FTC can't? Anytime they want to (appear to) tackle some issue, they want to create a new Cabinet position or otherwise government agency. I see this a lot when I am writing code. Like many others I know, I am often bad about writing new code before looking to see if I have written it somewhere before, and if I do find something I've written before, I had done it in such a way that it is not reusable. At the end of the day, I have 4-5x more code than I really needed to get the job done.

Actually, it doesn't. It can and has been done completely privately.

As far as distribution, that's only possible if the roads reflect demand rather than impose access. It's a very important distinction.

And efficiency is a funny thing, because the government is a monopoly, there is no way to say their way of doing things is most efficient, as there is no competing service with equal access to the market to show it can be done better or worse.

(More or less efficiency is the result of a comparison, how can you say X is the fastest athlete, when there is no one else competing?)

Where government has 100% control of an industry, no efficiency claims can be made. Not economically. I am sure Obama can say all kinds of crazy bullshit but that doesn't make it true.

I'm not too sure about that. The roads in my city that the government maintains are shit. Aged, cracked, broken and in need of serious repair. On the other hand the toll roads I pay to drive on are wide, uncracked, even, smooth pavement. Really a pleasure to drive on and I constantly see road crews maintaining them so they stay that way.

With all the money we pay in "road taxes" our roads should be made of fucking gold or something, but alas Guerilla is right, no one is allowed to compete with government so you don't really know if they're doing it the best, or the right way, or if they even spend your tax dollars on them at all.
