Video Why does this not exist?

A movie theatre chain that is dedicated to replaying old classics/hits.

Does it have to do with copyright laws? Whenever a chain replays an old film (Lion King just happened, Star Wars is coming up), the buzz is awesome and rightfully so. And the tickets sell out.

A move theatre that focuses on only playing classics (Star Wars, Alien movies, Indiana Jones, think of your favorite blockbusters of all time) would KILL. I'd love to see my favorite movies on the big screen.

We used to have one here called "star ship 9".

Movies tickets were $2. Place was awesome. The city bought it and tore it down to create office buildings and parking garages (makes more profit than taxing it). Fuckers.

That's upsetting. They should have charged more. The $9 I pay now for a movie is ridiculous (especially with the concession prices they charge), but almost tripling to $5 is realistic and worth it.

I love the cinema and hate the direction it's been going in since I was born.

You don't have one of those cheap $2-3 per ticket theaters around you? There's one here and they have Sunday Night Classics every week. They play shit like Indiana Jones, ET, Back to the Future, etc... But they also have a huge basement full of old reels. I doubt most theaters have the same.

ps - It doesn't kill at all. They almost never have anyone in the theater during the showings.

I do have one of those places, but they play 6-month old movies and not classics. It's also a shithole and not a wonder that most people don't want to go there. I never go there.

The theatre you describe is a dive and is based on cheap pricing, the entire experience is cheap. To attract masses you need at least some commercial appeal.

We used to have some 99-cent theaters in Nashville but I think most of them have closed down. Those times are over, now that you can have a home theater and Netflix. If you're not charging >$8 per ticket, it is hard to keep a theater going.

Plus, people got tired of getting jacked up and shot at in the parking lot.

There is still a good one though in the Vandy/Green Hills area that shows a lot of indie films:

Again, the cheapness is a poor strategy.

lol if you think most people have a sick home theater and Netflix with a 30-foot screen.

$8+ is overcharging. $5 is a good number.

Uhh, what? Cheap theatre + ghetto area of course you'll get that.

Theater in Vegas used to do this...saw Res Dogs, Jaws, the Exorcist and a bunch of other classics there, but they stopped doing it. Most people watch a movie once, and are content with that. I mean, people actually watch films on their smart phones now, because it's easy. I was always amazed at how low the turnout was, and this was 5 minutes from the UNLV campus.

Because people have big ass HQ tv's and easy access to any movie. I dont see a reason to watch a movie twice anyways, unless its really good. Only a couple movies come to mind.

I've seen them around here often. They do exist maybe not around you, but they do exist. One of my favorite was actually ran by a local church ($5 a movie), big open venue with tables, and they served food (burgers, brats, etcc...) and beer (it's fucking Wisconsin.) Since I moved out of that shit town I kind of miss it (but only that and the disc gold course.) They would also show Packers games. Was a good show. Unique kind of idea. Need the upsells to make money though. That being said it was better than going to any other theater out there period. Bigger city theaters suck ass, so many ass holes that go.

^ it is illegal to show movies to more then a few people (10 or more?????) in your home, church, town hall bldg etc....

read the disclaimer before each movie, u know the FBI warning.

My church used to do the same and show old classics in their hall to the local congregration on a saturday night, it was fun because you could be around people you know and like and the kids could run around and have a fun time. We quit doing that because the pastors finally felt guilty about the whole thing and everyone agreed.

dont know how your church broke the law and profitted from it. antything to make money i guess- now thats BOSS!

we also had a dollar movie theater a few towns over, cheap prices onlly attracted the punk azzzz kids with no money, and they still tried to sneak in the backdoors.

it also attracted bums that actually paid their dollar but they stayed in there all day to keep out of the hot summer sun.

the one and only time i went to that theater the place smelled like piss. and on our way out there was a ghetto chick that mustve got into an arguement with the usher because she was yelling..."when my boyfriend comes out of jail, he gonna fuck u up!!"

They bought a legitimate movie theater. The place had been a shit beat down second rate place for years. It wasn't a church (at least not when they bought it), they didn't worship there. It is simply owned by a church.

It was a public service provided by the church kind of thing.

I don't know all the legality of it but it must be legal because it's been going for probably more than 10 years now I think.

This is somewhat on-topic. I was stationed in the the mid-west when I was in the Air Force... Kansas of all places. Thing is tho, they had BOMB ass movie theaters. You could literally walk in, pay like 5 dollars extra for balcony seating if you so choose, otherwise ground level. But the seats reclined, rocked, and were situated around tables. Every single seat had buttons to page a waitress or waiter to order anything from steak and lobster, to mozzarella cheese sticks, and here is the kicker.... ALCOHOL, both liqueur and beer... *edit - thought I would mention, prices were comparable to ordinary theaters here on the west coast.

Then I move back to California and nothing like that exists.

There's a theater close to me that plays classics all the time... Rocky Horror Picture Show, Top Gun, The Goonies, etc.

Shit is cash

Quit outin mah theatres, yo!

I happen to be on Bangkok right now where the theaters are even moar lux... But you do have to pay here accordingly.

In Memphis there was one very much like what the OP was talking about... The appletree 10 in Cordova, if I remember correctly. But that was the early 1990's, so I have no idea if they kept that format.

But to answer the actual question, Id say it is because low-dollar theatres attract low-income peoples. -Who hardly ever make good customers.

They have a couple discount theaters around here. Cost around $3.00 to see a movie. The only thing is they get new releases about a month later than regular theaters.

This does exist, just not in Amurrrica. There's a big-ass "Film Museum" right in the center of my city that only shows old films.

By any chance a Warren Theatre? Warren Theatres

They even have a cry room where parents can still watch the movie if the baby starts to cry so it wont bother the other patrons. Pretty dope place.

For those that don't know, Cool as Ice is arguably the worst movie ever, while Citizen Kane is arguably the best. This is the type of thing that I would do too if I had a theater.

There's one in my town. I hit it up every weekend just to see the classics I wasn't old enough to see on the big screen. It's one of those "dinner and a movie" places so you grub out on an awesome meal and watch a classic on the big screen.

Theaters are dying because of the home viewing experience. So you suggest they take the only current upside of going to the theatre (new hit movies), and replace them with movies that have been out on blu-ray for years now?

Do you not understand why they are failing and the fact that big budget and 3d movies that are more entertaining to watch in a theater than at home is what is keeping the industry together?

Only problem, as you walk in the floor is sticky and there are dudes jacking it everywhere around you.

They can always use a helping hand!
