Hey guys,

I am just starting to get clean up my computer again because I installed a lot of crap the last few month.
And a lot of downloads are still waiting in folders like "Stuff 01", "Stuff 06" to get sorted. However it's a mess!

What are you using for cleaning up your computer?

So far, I can recommend those tools to find crap data:

Updated List:

- CCleaner
- ToniArts EasyCleaner
- Advanced SystemCare 5
- Spybot - Search & Destroy

Any experience in "cleaning tools" is appreciated!

Every few months I'll go into the Windows Program uninstaller and remove stuff I haven't used or don't need anymore.

Then I run Spybot (update first). There is a setting to "run once on bootup", this sets spybot to run prior to any non-windows software from running. This is the most effective.

Then I run CCleaner

After that, shit is like a new car.

Wiping does not protect from spy- and malware. (Well indirectly it does because everything's lost after wiping)

I used to use CCleaner quite regularly, but the last time it fucked up my program associations so badly it eventually became a contributing factor in choosing to do a reformat, which is really the best choice if you want to clean your system.

The time it takes to run scans and cleanups and defragging shouldn't be disregarded as it's still a lengthy process and doesn't do as good a job and can potentially cause other problems. A reformat and re installation of everything on your box shouldn't take more than a day if you've got your data stored on different drives from that of your system (C), which everyone should be doing anyway.

Ghost your base OS with apps...etc, then re-image when your system gets slow. Keep you data on external drive and back that one on another.

When you install so much crap on Windows, you can't go back using crapware.

Same problem here. You can't re-image fully encrypted system as far as I know.

Same problem here. You can't re-image fully encrypted system as far as I know.

For things like this, it is usually 'annoying' and 'take up to several hours' to do it right the first time. Once you figure out what you're doing, it's simple.

Why on earth would you encrypt your OS and apps? You don't keep all your data on the same drive as your operating system and programs do you?

Well, inside my notebook I only have one hdd.

So you're one dead hard drive away from losing everything? I hope that's not the case and the aforementioned external HDDs are on some sort of daily backup. Nevertheless, I'm pretty sure you can encrypt just the data partition and leave the OS/programs partition unencrypted so it makes for easy reinstallation, not to mention a faster computer. I mean, did you ever think that perhaps the system slowdown isn't related to all the crap you've installed but instead the fact that you've encrypted your entire OS and programs?

You must be involved in some pretty nefarious business or some bad ass hackers must be after your shit if you feel the need to encrypt all your data stores. Or you don't want that hacked copy of office 2003 to get stolen

No, I'm not one dead hdd away from losing everything. As I said before, I use external drives for backups. And yes, they are scheduled daily.
Of course, a fully encrypted hdd makes the OS slower but that wasn't ever the case. It just has slowed down for about a couple of weeks.
However, I'm not here to talk about the whole purpose of encrypting a system volume. If you're interested anyway, I can redirect you to some articles.

I'm using Avira too, but the tools mentioned are more specific in some ways. However, you should try them, at least CCleaner and see what it does. Your computer can by full of mal- and spyware even when you use a firewall and an antivirus solution.

are alll new to me. recently i began testing with system care 5, Driver Genius Professional Edition, even more blackviper, and COMODO BackUp to seal the deal. past 2 day on going effort in attempt to create equally matched performance stability win 7 x64 with my kubuntu backtrack x64 cuda. in the end unix wins with virutal win or wine.
