This is vB 3.6, quite an old version that was released back in May 2006, I can't remember back that far if vB had the ability to prevent people from posting threads if their posts are less than a specified number..

1. It is easier to find a ruler than it is to find a king.

As such, modding this place is hard work and a total time-suck. Kudos to those still dedicated enough to keep it going. It's easy to find mod volunteers who will spend all day banning people they don't like. It's not so easy to find a mod willing to keep the place clean and deal with all the complaints while keeping the WF spirit alive.

2. When was the last time anyone thanked SEO_Mike? He's been quietly keeping this place free of hundreds of spam threads a day for longer than anyone.

3. Before you get too invested in harassing .hack about his decisions recognize that he's just going through what every new mod here has gone through since the beginning. When you get mod status you get slammed by complaints from every side of every argument. At first you want to help so you can't help but get involved which pisses off everyone causing a near mutinous attitude. Eventually you accept the no censorship and quit caring and taking sides on everything. Regardless, if you think Jon is going to get rid of a mod due to popular opinion you're kidding yourself. He's fiercely loyal to his mods and you'd have to really fuck up good to have him remove you. Which I think has only happened like twice in the last 6 years. As an exmod whose actually gotten this place sued for millions of dollars at the demands that I lose my mod status and still kept mod for another 5 years I'll attest to Jons mod loyalty. Trust me don't test it.

I don't know about others, but I actually sent .Hack a personal thanks a week or so ago just for trying to step up and start to fix some of the bullshit going around here. So I think I speak for a majority when I say that the effort is appreciated, but at the same time why hasn't this issue of spam been properly addressed and handled? Given that there is a solution that most people have agreed is pretty reasonable...

IStead of relying on mods which they do work hard. Instead we have public moderation where anyone with 500 posts or more can flag a thread and delete it. Just like craigslist flagging.

If that was implemented, all of these spam threads would be down by now, instead of having to wait for the mods to do it themselves.

I never mean to talk badly about mods bc I know how big of a pain it is. But when they're out hunting for cock, and us losers have nothing better to do, we should be able to delete threads by all our combined votes.

Easier said than done, but whatever, were l337 right?

All it would do is keep less people from spamming, less accounts from being created, and isn't even that hard to implement. SO WHYYYYYY?? There's just no logic it behind it whatsoever.

As much as I hate the spam, I can't help agree with all of what was said in this post. Speaking from personal experience, it is the biggest time sink of a job to do and an utterly thankless one as well. So I feel for all the staff when we start bitching and moaning about this type of thing. I know they are trying to do their best and something will eventually come about that stops all this spamming shit. Until then, I will continue to fully appreciate the work they do undertake in cleaning the mess that is always here for them.

IMO all mods are doing a great job. There are BAN hammer special threads where we all can post. I have reported plenty of times and I have seen action taken within less than 24 hours.

Although massive amount of spam threads being posted in STS is a concern here as it irritates when the whole first page of STS is filled with ~~~~~~Watch@@@@. I suppose we should implement a rule that no one can post/start a new thread for next 10 days after joining the forums.

This way we can inform (by posting a message when he/she tries to post on boards) new loyal members registering on the forums so that they can understand our concerns of making this wonderful community spam free and keep the spammers away from the boards at the same time.

I think the issue with that solution is it would cause an uptick in new members making 10-20 posts of bullshit on other threads, which they can do in just a few minutes.

Something I have noticed over the years is quite a few posts from new members asking how many posts until they can put links in their sigs. I don't know if it is still like this, but it required a post count within a certain range and/or age of account being several weeks old.

But what fucked them up is that these conditions were unspecified, and seemingly arbitrary. So it was difficult for them to automate against it. Flood control for searches here is implemented in a similar fashion.

Why not use something like this for new threads? And implement flood control for posts by new members.

They will inevitably try to figure it out, which will generate a lot of 'permission denied' errors. but every time one of these actions are denied, it could be logged, and flood control implemented on the IP/user account as well.



If this were a board about outdoor gardening or antique sportscars, then yeah, spammers gonna spam. But it's ironic that they get in here when a lot of us are doing the same shit on other boards.

Also, the modeerators here are exceptional; I know only a small percentage of what they are dealing with actually hits the board. They've done a great job responding to bullshit we bring to them in threads like ▇▇BAN BLOODBATH 2012▇▇, but their time is better spent on dealing with real shit like BST scammers and trollers. Xrumers should be squashed before they even hit the gate.
