minimalist and contemporary. As for actual furniture itself, if you are moving into an apartment with a chance that you will be moving again I wouldn't buy anything too flash - just IKEA (do you guys have that?) shit that can be pulled apart and moved easily.

Some of my favorite pieces came from IKEA a few years back. Nobody ever looks at it and goes "Ewww! That's IKEA!"
Some of it looks really cool and holds up well enough (as long as you don't drop-kick it) If there's not one near you, don't even bother though. The shipping on that shit will diminish any savings you'd enjoy by shopping there. I'm kind of a minimalist, that's why I like it. I'm about to grab an awesome table from World Market too. Otherwise, I dunno. My friend's wife gets their shit from Rooms to Go and I think it's butt-ugly but it may be just the ugly shit she picks out. |

I agree with Beach Affiliate...
IKEA furniture can hold up real well. Moving is a pain in the ass, and if you end up buying expensive furniture and living with roommates, they are likely to fuck it up, etc. If you fuck up IKEA furniture, who cares?

For minimalism IKEA is OK. My entire house is IKEA furnished right now, bed, desk, TV stand, couch are all from there.
Easy to setup, easy to break down when you move again. Having said that my desk rocks. My couch that turns into bed sucks. My bed is cool as well. However next time I move to a different state I will not be buying a bed. I want to go true minimalism and do something japanese style...but I will still have a table with chairs cause sitting on the floor sucks.

Here is kind of what I will be aiming for next time:
(from Platform Beds, Bedroom Furniture, Japanese Furniture - Tokyo) ![]() and this for kitchen ![]() Finally something like this for the living room ![]() You will have to drop about $5k, but for new stuff that's about how much furniture costs anyway, you can probably find stuff cheaper. If you are balla, hire a decorator, give them $5K and tell them what you want.

Did webnet just post some child porn? WTF is with that photo.. the faces are young, but then they are also photoshopped on to the bodies. That's just so fucked up.
Also Ikea is the shit, nearly my whole house in from there. Yeah the stuff is cheap as hell and will break but I can replace everything in my living room for like $1500. |

I hate that I can't edit stuff after you post them for a bit.
Something I wanted to note is if you go to minimalist people will actually complain about it. Girls used to tell me my apartment looked like a Dr's office. Added a few pictures and art I like and suddenly no one made any comment. Did not even go overboard, just three pieces of art hanged in the living room walls and one at the bedroom.

Some really simple stuff is great from Ethan Allen, but it's costly. If you are going to have roommates then you need to be very cautious about what you buy as they will FUCK it up. If you have or plan to have kids, I think they can do even more damage than roommates. I have had Ikea in the past. It's simple and cheap. A bed frame is a frame. Just get a mattress somewhere else. Ideally one with the wooden feet so literally the Ikea shit is just for decoration.

5K on furniture is fucking excessive let alone paying a decorator 5K to pick and choose for you. I decked my current place out for under $1500. You could go even cheaper if you didn't buy new white goods like I did (fridge, washer, dryer).
My parents paid 5K for some fucking Italian leather couch and recliners a few years ago. They're in a position where they can buy stuff like that and it wouldn't hurt but how many people get this sorta stuff on credit simply because they want a nice looking place? I have a reliable yet not flashy car, cook my own food which I get from the markets and can slice so much off bills it isn't funny. Is all that furniture nice? Yeah but I can't get away from the fact I can make 5K go so much further than a couch. I love have zero debt and knowing that even though I don't have nice stuff now, I'm going to actually own something of real value in a few years time. Fuck the banks and a mortgage, I'm going to be buying outright. Too many people getting around in flash cars, coming home to their baller pad with loans and credit maxed out, thinking they're living lavish but they don't own shit nor have a dollar to their name. TLDR version: fuck yo couch, nigger |

Just goes to show how differently people value material possessions. Personally I couldn't disagree more.
I have no problem spending hundreds or thousands of dollars on single pieces of furniture. I don't do it often but I don't think twice when a piece really grabs me. I guess it's like a hobby, like you had to have been around it for a long time and been raised to appreciate it, like buying art or something, I don't know. My family has sick antiques and I guess I got used to having nice, old, well built, well kept furniture when I was growing up. And I built cabinets and furniture for a while under a master woodworker which really hooked me to fine quality furniture. I like being surrounded by well made things when I'm at home. I could go on and on about this topic but good furniture/decor/architecture is inspirational, it gives off energy and resonates with the people who interact with it. </woowoo> Car on the other hand I don't care nearly as much about. Point a to point b with a sick system and I'm happy.

Search the wealthy towns/neighborhoods on craigslist. I bought a 4K leather couch for $800. Thing was barely sat on; couple had it for 3 years, and decided they wanted new wallpaper and needed all new furniture. I wanted a classic looking brown leather couch but couldn't see myself paying $1500+ for a couch with little ones in the house, so I lurked craigs diligently for months until this came up and I pounced.

Chiasso.com WestElm.com Roomandboard.com Ikea's not bad, but their quality seems to be kind of hit or miss. Some stuff is really good, but the quality per dollar spent doesn't seem at all consistent. Also - every city will generally have some big local warehouse furniture store, and most of those are now carrying a surprising amount of modern-ish stuff, particularly when it comes to couches and chairs. If you like to bargain, those are often a good place to start - then fill in the rest of what you need with the more expensive pieces from strictly modern stores. For accent pieces like lamps, I would strongly recommend a trip to your local Marshall's/TJ Maxx/Ross/HomeGoods. You tend to get much higher-quality pieces at the same prices you'd pay at somewhere like Target or Ikea. |
