I really do want to be putting that amount of work in, but I haven't a clue what I should be doing for 16 hours a day.

I had the same concern. I suppose we're supposed to be doing whatever we do for 4 or 5 hours a day but just a lot more of it.

I guess the real problem lies not in working 8 hours vs. 16 but rather in the load of people who work less than 2, less than 1, less than 1/2 hour a day and wonder they don't make any income.

That said, I ...uh..er.... I gotta go.

John and joe do you guys live entirely off the internet? Did you go to college and you've graduated or did you not bother?

Right now I can't spend all time working on web sites because of college, my side job, my gf, and my social life. There just isn't much time left over after all that, even during the summer! I couldn't make time for it unless I dropped out and who knows how long until another massive bubble bursts and a lot of us web developers get fucked? I'm attending college merely as backup in case someday in the future something terrible happens and my finances aren't what they need to be. Having a college degree would be crucial at such a point in time. Plus learning is awesome.

I live off my earnings from the Internet, but I still go to college. I'm working on a degree in Finance, and don't take anything related to computers.

My schedule is rather busy, but I do find time to fit in my classes and social life - minus the gf (waste of time and money ). I approach college as my backup, but I probably have enough saved to last me a year or two. College is inexpensive down here in NC, and 18 hours out of my week isn't too bad.

I approach time (during school) as follows:
There are 168 hours in a week.
I sleep for 5 a day, so I have 133 to do stuff
When school is in session I have 18 hours of class, I probably attend 15. So there are 118 hours left.
I socialize for maybe 14-20 hours a week, 114 left for other stuff
I can do 50 hours of work easy during school, so that leaves 64 hours for wasting time*.

* This makes me realize I could easily get more done if I maxamized my time better.

Make more sites and improve the one's you have. Always have a few projects on the table, when you finish one start the next one.

Nice post John, motivating

There is just such a wealth of information when you start in this game, every week I think "Ok, I know some shit now" and then the next week I discover so much more.. "OK, now I know some shit"

Endless cycle..

Totally agree with Johns Post. One more thing I would add also is that along with hard work, you need to build up a solid network. Your network will eventually help you be more productive by getting others to do what your not good at.

Hence why myself and a lot of others do visit forums a lot. All about building a network.

Log in to Adsense and hit refresh every two minutes is always a sure fire way of increasing earnings.

On a serious note, why not churn out some more sites?

The reason why the time investment is so key is ultimately you have to find those ideas and programs and actions that nobody else or few others are capitalizing on. That is when you will make the real money. If you just go along and follow what everyone else is doing, it is possible to scratch out some money with a lot of hardwork. However, the real time investment needs to be spent going outside the box looking for new opportunities. You may fail 20 times, 50 times, 100 times for every time you are succesful, but those successes can potentially be huge.

I'm reviving this thread because I found it to be truly motivational.

What I've learned in these past few months is that at first you need to have a test site. You need to learn how to do something before you start spending 17hrs/day with repeating it. Once you have that down, you keep making more and more and it really shouldn't be that hard if you're dedicated to it.

And about being as successful as Bill Gates and all that crap... well I doubt that's any of our realistic goals here, not even one of the goals we set for ourselves because it'll help us get there faster. For me 50k/month would be a "ton of cash", more than I would ever know what to do with.

Working hard and being diligent is extremely important. Always looking for more opportunities and keeping an open mind is critical. For me, being consistent with a work schedule is what I try to do. If I put in 8 hours in a day then that is good for me. Some days when I'm in total damage control mode or there is big opportunity or a crisis then I might work a lot more and that's fine too. I don't agree though that you need to abandon your life outside of your computer in order to be successful. Working 17 hours a day and forgetting about everything else might work in the short term, but if you keep up that kind of a work schedule you will likely burn out and become extremely unhealthy mentally and physically. I think that for the long term, finding a balance between work and play is best.

Exactly Buddies....Hard Work to the max level ...I call it sacrifice...When i was making a measly $ 50 a day, i wasnt doing any kind of saccrifice to reach the $ 1 K / day goal i always dreamed of.

So i changed my life, i uninstalled MSN messenger, threw away my cell phone, beat my procrastination, and finally saying myself that i have to fucking do things when they should be done. i was able to reach my $ 1 K /day goal in less than 3 months of 18 hours/day pure work.

And the goals keep getting incremented and incremented...and It pays off in the end. so hell yeah it was worth it.

And the rich get richer.

I agree a lot on this point. Don't ever stay at home/office or in front of the PC without taking breaks or going out.

I refresh my head by going to the gym and pumping some iron.

Hmmm... I dunno. I'm a big fan of the "work smart not hard" mentality. I think the most important facet, for instance, is to spend a certain amount of time each day considering new ideas - and the best inspiration for new ideas oftentimes lies off your computer out in the real world. Friends shouldn't be considered a luxury of those that have the money to have them either. True friends should be your testing audience, your idea sparkers, your lunch and dinner meetings (if nothing else for an excuse to get out of the house).

Also, if you work 17hrs a day 7 days a week you insulate your mind against alternative ways to do things. Our brains are built on creative inspiration. One of the best things that I've done recently was returned to school to take classes at the local UC. Not only am I refreshing a lot of my marketing ideas, but I'm also learning new opportunities and marketing issues that companies face. Oh, plus I'm meeting new people with new ideas, and actually I've earned a new client out of it as well!

Work hard, yes, but work smart. A smart webmaster builds a site that needs little to no maintenance. A smart webmaster learns whatever programming techniques will make his sites more dynamic and create a better user experience. A smart webmaster knows what he is best at, and sources to outside providers what can be done for better and for less by other professionals. And most importantly, a smart webmaster doesn't turn aside his friends and the outside world for the joy of being one of Google's bitches. We're all in this for money - but the only reason we're after money is because of what it affords.
